Amakhosi Safari Lodge is extremely luxurious and is located in its own private reserve. This 17,000 ha reserve combines savannah, wetland and mountains and is home to the Big Five as well as giraffe, zebra, hyena, warthog, wildebeest, various antelope, crocodiles and hippopotamuses.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
Amakhosi is a 5 1/2 hour drive from Johannesburg.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES:
Its six River Suites are built in the shape of a Zulu shield and decorated in a modern Zulu style. They are air-conditioned and have a sitting room, bedroom, ensuite bathroom and floor to ceiling windows which open onto a private viewing deck across the river. The Umntwana Suite is even more special with glass walls, high thatched ceilings and an open plan design. It has a plunge pool on the viewing deck outside and a hammock overlooking the river.
The Isigodlo (meaning chief residence) is a private villa that sleeps four and has fabulous views of the setting sun. It has a spacious lounge, two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, a plunge pool and a large wooden deck giving wonderful views of the valley and wildlife below. The main lodge has an inside and outside lounge, library, bar and dining room where the Zulu chef cooks African cuisine with European touches. There is a swimming pool with loungers where guests can relax between game drives.
There are plenty of activities to keep guests busy – game drives, bush walks and even frog-spotting. Between November and March guides take guests on night trips into the bush in search of amphibians and to listen to their mating calls.
