"Three Trees Lodge is perfect if you are looking to spend a few days unwinding and reconnecting with nature. Simon and Cheryl own and manage the lodge, and focus a lot of their time on responsible tourism."

OVERVIEW:

The lodge specializes in the history of the 2nd Anglo Boer War (1899 to 1902), and is close to the battlefield of Spioenkop so it is an ideal base for those interested in South Africa's military history. A stay here can easily be combined with a couple of nights with its sister lodge, Fugitive' s Drift which is 2 1/2 hours drive away. Fugitive' s Drift is particularly convenient for visiting the battlefields of the Anglo Zulu War as it is positioned between Rorke's Drift and Isandlwana.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Located in the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains, near Spioenkop Game Reserve.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT THREE TREE HILL LODGE:

It is owned and run by Simon and Cheryl Blackburn. It is intimate and comfortable with the accommodation in cottages around the main lodge, each with its own ensuite bathroom and veranda. In addition to 6 cottages with a double/twin room, there is one with a two-bedroom suite suitable for families of up to 2 adults and 3 children under 12, and there is also a two-bedroom self-catering lodge, which sleeps 4 adults.

ACTIVITIES AT THREE TREE HILL LODGE:

You don't need to be interested in military history to visit Three Tree Hill. There are plenty of other activities to keep guests busy.

  • These include nature trails, hiking, mountain biking and horse riding.
  • Game watching is also possible. The Spioenkop Game Park borders onto the lodge and is home to rhino, giraffe and many types of antelope.
  • The area is also particularly good for birdwatching as over 300 different species of bird have been seen in the area.
