Marataba Safari Lodge is an excellent option for anyone looking for malaria-free safari in a spectacular location - and in particular a great choice for families. Occupying an area described as where the plains touch the mountains, the lodge was designed to harmonise with the setting – and the result is truly superb.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
Marataba Safari Lodge is situated in a private reserve of some 23,000 hectares adjacent to Marakele National Park.The property offers high-quality accommodation in a wildlife-rich area! Marataba Reserve is located in the foothills of the Drakenberg Mountains, approximately three-and-a-half hours by road from Johannesburg. An air taxi service is available from Grand Central Airport, and the reserve has a helicopter landing pad.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES:
The communal spaces are housed in a structure inspired by the height and grandeur of the mountains, a tall building of timber, brick, and glass. Inside, there is an open-plan lounge and diner. The lounge features comfortable seating in a variety of fabrics and colours, as well as chunky coffee tables strewn with books, some intriguing sculptures and wall art, and a cosy fireplace. The diner is very elegant, with separate tables and curve-backed chairs. This space flows out onto a deck, where you can relax with a drink and enjoy amazing views over the plains as far as the majestic mountains. The grounds of the lodge contain a spacious swimming pool flanked by sunloungers. There is also a fire-pit, perfect for gatherings at dawn and dusk to share safari stories. A range of products from essentials to clothes, accessories, and art is available for purchase at the lodge’s boutique, and if you are in need of a little pampering you will relish the spa treatments on offer in your own suite – massages, mani–pedis, facials.
The guest accommodation at Marataba Safari Lodge consists of 15 tented suites, all constructed from canvas, stone, and thatch. These are positioned on either side of the communal building. Each is raised on stilts to provide a deck area, shaded by canvas roofing. The deck has a couple of comfy chairs and a small table. Inside the suite, there is a double bed, bedside tables and lighting, and ample storage space. Amenities include air conditioning, a telephone, a safe, a mini-bar, and a hairdryer. The en-suite facilities are very well appointed, with separate flush toilet, twin washbasins, indoor and outdoor showers, and a lovely big bathtub! The size of each suite is 45 square metres, sufficiently spacious to accommodate a sleeper couch for a child aged up to 12 years – three of the suites are triple rooms. A further seven suites have a double bed that can be converted to twin beds. And one suite is suitable for disabled travellers.
Marataba offers some superb safari activities – game drives, bush walks, and river cruises. There is also a children’s programme! The game drives take place in early morning and late afternoon, while bush walks start out in mid-morning. River cruises are available at sunrise, midday, and sunset. Marataba contains a real wealth of wildlife! You can expect to see predators such as lion, leopard, and brown hyena, in addition to a wonderful range of herbivores – elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, eland, reedbuck, and the rare tsessebe.
There are plenty of bird species too, including one of the largest breeding colonies of Cape vulture in the world! If you take a trip on the Miss Mara, the Lodge’s own boat, you are sure to see some beautiful waterbirds as well as the resident hippos. And things to do for children include family safari drives, bush orientation, bug CSI, dung tracking, stargazing, and games nights!
