To top it off, the people really are lovely here – every visitor feels supremely welcome! The lake beaches of Malawi combine very easily with Zambia’s safari areas to form a brilliant bush-and-beach break.
Once known as Nyasaland, Malawi is a landlocked country in the south-eastern region of Africa. Zambia lies to its north-west, while Tanzania is situated to the north-east and Mozambique is found on the east, south, and west sides of the country. Malawi’s total area is over 118,000 square kilometres, and approximately a third of this is Lake Malawi.
Malawi’s capital city is Lilongwe, which is also the largest city here. Lilongwe has an international airport, and flights between this airport and Zambia’s Kenneth Kauda International Airport, located in the country’s capital Lusaka, usually take only an hour and a half or so. Lilongwe’s airport is also just 35 minutes from Mfuwe Airport, which serves Zambia’s famous South Luangwa National Park. So it’s very easy to add the lake beaches of Malawi to a safari in Zambia, to create a superb bush-and-beach vacation.
These lake beaches are situated well off the beaten track. They’re not quite the classic tropical beaches of Tanzania’s Zanzibar, but they do offer squeakily pristine white sands and sparkling turquoise waters. We recommend the main and western shore of Lake Malawi, as well as Limoka Island.
Malawi does provide a few safari options – the national parks of Liwonde and Majete, and Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve. However, we don’t sell these areas, as we currently favour the superior wildlife viewing available in Zambia.
Overall, Malawi is an excellent choice for anyone interested in a laidback beach break – either as a standalone trip or following a wildlife-rich Zambia safari!
