When To Visit Cape Town:

The Mount Nelson is one of the most famous hotels in Cape Town and was originally built as an outpost for the empire to cater for guests from the Union Castle Cruise liners.

The Mount Nelson hotel is undoubtedly a landmark hotel. It is ideal for traditionalists who appreciate its colonial charm and historical significance. However, we find it a little dated and would not recommend it to those of you who prefer somewhere smaller, less formal or quirky.

Still retaining an elegant colonial grandeur, it sits in 7 acres of manicured gardens at the foot of Table Mountain, just minutes away from downtown Cape Town.

The Mount Nelson has 209 rooms, with a good combination of rooms and suites, and is laid out across several accommodation wings. There are two heated swimming pools, two tennis courts, a fitness centre and spa. The hotel caters well for children with a fully-supervised children’s centre and an extensive range of leisure facilities and outdoor space.

The main restaurant and bar, The Planet, has a good reputation for fine dining but the hotel is particularly well known for its famous Afternoon Tea that is something of an institution in Cape Town.

The Mount Nelson Afternoon Tea is probably the most famous in the whole city. If you can book far enough in advance, this should certainly be on any tea-lovers list! Another indulgent activity, venture into the Librisa Spa for a natural botanical treatment - ideal after a long journey and flight. Cape Town offers a wealth of things to do, from scaling Table Mountain to shopping along Kloof Street. There are also historical walking tours, fynbos sunset walks, township farm tours and painting classes all available.
