"Mala Mala's Rattray's is the more luxurious property on the Mala Mala Reserve. Very well-appointed rooms and high levels of service and guiding combine with epic game viewing. A seriously good lodge and one that is quite significantly more affordable than other top-end camps."

OVERVIEW:

Rattray's on Mala Mala is the most exclusive of the three Mala Mala camps in the reserve. This is a very private luxury camp that offers an intimate safari experience and very high standards of accommodation. However, the Sabi Sands is an area that is home to some of Africa’s most luxurious lodges, some of which are smarter and may offer a more polished experience.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Mala Mala is a private reserve located on the border of South Africa’s Sabi Sands and Kruger National Park. The game-viewing here is phenomenally good – we believe this area is one of the very best in Africa.

?ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT RATTRAY'S ON MALA MALA:

Its eight extremely comfortable suites overlook the Sand River. They are beautifully furnished in an attractive colonial style and each has its own private plunge pool. The main building is elegant and includes an air-conditioned library with an extensive collection of wildlife books, a wine cellar and a beautiful viewing deck.

ACTIVITIES AT RATTRAY'S ON MALA MALA:

Mala Mala is the largest of the Sabi Sands Reserves.

  • Not only does it offer its guests the largest game-viewing area, but it also has much the largest border with the Kruger National Park itself –this virtually guarantees good game as animals can wander in from the Kruger.
  • Just to add to the advantages of staying here, Mala Mala also has the largest river section of any private reserve. This is invaluable as game-viewing is dependent on the river, especially in the dry season.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

The accommodations, customer service, live safari action and food were out of this world! The private cabanas were very luxurious and no words can describe the feeling of sitting on the porch watching big game roam the field below! The entire staff was so welcoming- at risk of sounding cliche- they felt like family by then end of our stay. Rattray’s was quiet, personable and romantic...ideal for couples or small groups.

Mala Mala exceeded our expectations in all respects. The style and warmth of this establishment is unparalleled. It is a beautiful camp with accommodations that are truly extraordinary, Our Khaya was beautiful inside and out and extremely comfortable and well appointed with an "Out of Africa" influence. We loved the his and hers bathroom, huge dressing rooms, our own plunge pool and open deck to enjoy the visiting wildlife to the Sand river below. Every day we saw game from our deck, including Elephants and Rhino at the river drinking. Vervet monkeys played in our yard daily. Our game drives were incredible, each drive was better than the previous one, made so by our knowledgeable young Ranger Fritz, a photographer himself, who expertly positioned our vehicle to achieve the best light for stunning and memorable images. He graciously shared his knowledge about the many and varied aspects of the Mala Mala preserve and patiently answered all of our questions about the wildlife. One of the things that impressed me the most was his respect for the animals and environment. He worked tirelessly to find us the most extraordinary game experiences, including an elephant bull charging a pride of 15 lions and cubs, a confrontation between cape hunting dogs attempting to recover their kill from six hyena’s and a magical afternoon spent among a herd of Elephants in the Sand river bed. The staff are the heart at Mala Mala with their warmth, hospitality and attention to detail. The camp Manager was exceptionally friendly and helpful and we appreciated the introduction tour on arrival. We were very impressed by the accommodating and genuinely welcoming staff of Mala Mala who do everything they can to ensure your comfort, and make every guest feel welcome and wanted. The food was varied, fresh and delicious. The Chef was very accommodating about my Vegetarian diet and provided inventive and delicious alternative meals, such as Quiche and mushroom risotto. We loved the made to order breakfasts. We thoroughly enjoyed our Rangers company at meals, Fritz is a charming, knowledgeable and articulate young man who shared his knowledge and experiences of wildlife, photography, and African history with us. I was not prepared for the true beauty, hospitality and attention to detail at Mala Mala. You get the sense that everyone is really paying attention to you and your interests to help create the most wonderful stay. It was sad to say farewell, but we smile when we think of the amazing experiences we had and hopefully will have the good fortune to return.
