"A lodge full of quirks, packed with character and a focus on the activities, particularly camel-assisted walking safaris. Verity, the owner, is at the core of the lodge and a stay here offers an adventurous safari off the beaten track. "

The lodge is able to offer an excellent mix of activities due to its setting. It also wins points for its very homely feel - a big thumbs-up from YZ!

Situated in Laikipia, the lodge is approached via a track through the savanna bush.

The main building is a characterful wood, stone and thatch structure – the look we love at YZ! It is surrounded by garden grounds and boasts amazing views over the Plateau and down to the River. Inside, there is plenty of comfortable and colourful seating, a lot of it wooden framed with ample cushions! This is set around coffee tables, while the bar is positioned at the back of the space. A few steps lead up into the dining room, which has upright chairs around a large wooden table for communal meals. There is also a telescope here – and both lounge and dining room flow out onto a deck, which is the perfect place to sit, eat, enjoy the view. Guests also enjoy taking in the view from the lodge’s gorgeous infinity pool. And finally, there is a shop, selling clothes, jewellery and craft items, as well as local honey!

Guest accommodation at Sabuk Lodge consists of four cottages for a maximum of two people apiece in addition to one larger cottage, Eagle Cottage, designed for a group or family. All are constructed from wood, stone and thatch, similar in style to the main building. All are open fronted, too, with a lovely veranda. Each of the four standard cottages contains either a double bed or twin beds, a pair of chairs plus small table, storage space, and en-suite facilities comprising flush toilet, washbasin and bath. Eagle Cottage has two bedrooms, a separate seating area, a dining area, loads of storage space, and its own plunge pool!

*Please be aware that we are unable to book this property for families with young children under the age of 6 years, for safety reasons relating to the balconies, decks and railings.*

Many exciting activities are available from Sabuk Lodge.

  • The property is set in over 600 hectares of plains, woodlands and scrublands, home to an astonishing wealth of wildlife. Lion, leopard, rhino and elephant may be spotted on game drives, in addition to cheetah, hyena, wild dog, zebra, giraffe, gazelle and many more!
  • The birdlife is brilliant, featuring such highlights as ostrich, pelicans, bee-eaters, eagles.
  • The lodge’s guided walks are ideal for getting to know the area really well, or guests can explore on horseback or through camel safari!
  • Fly camping is also highly recommended – staff at the lodge excel at organising camel treks to the campsite, which comprises a few domed tents in the wilderness.
  • Visits to local schools are also possible, while the River provides further things to do – swimming, fishing, tubing.
  • Guiding standards are very impressive – all guides have expert knowledge of the region and are happy to share their wisdom and to answer any questions put to them by guests.
  • All staff are friendly and approachable, keen to ensure that guests feel at home in this very homely place!
  • Food and drink is full board and special diets accommodated.
  • There is a laundry service, but there is no telephone service due to the remote location of the lodge.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
