"What a truly unbelievable view; one of Africa's finest. The views are matched by the sheer quality of the camp... this is a very high end luxury property created from years of safari experience. One of Africa's finest lodges."

OVERVIEW:

The word ‘Angama’ is Swahili, meaning ‘to be suspended in mid-air’. There are truly spectacular 180-degree vistas, sweeping down to the rippling plains of the Maasai Mara below! Angama Mara has heaps to recommend it and is a great option for travellers seeking a little luxury on safari.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Located high above Africa's stunning Great Rift Valley - overlooking the famous Maasai Mara.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT ANGAMA MARA:

The site is surrounded by trees, providing cool shade in the hot sunshine. The communal areas are housed in a very stylish brick-and-wood main lodge building, with contemporary interiors flowing onto a chic deck. The lounge has been built to let in plenty of light, with whole walls of windows. Other than a rug on the wooden floor, soft furnishings are sparse – the designer is not a fan of such clutter as scatter cushions! However, the seating is very comfortable, both in the lounge and in the dining area. There is also a library, a curio shop and a gym. The deck provides room for outdoor dining and even features a sunken fire pit with views across the plains. And the swimming pool is set back slightly from the main building, creating a serene spot to chill out after a busy day of safari activities!

The guest accommodation at Angama Mara consists of 30 tented suites in total, laid out as two separate camps. Each benefits from an awesome view of the reserve, from its 11-metres-wide floor-to-ceiling glass front! This feature incorporates sliding double-doors onto a deck that has two relaxing red rocking-chairs, ideal for appreciating the scenery. The tents are made out of canvas – outside a classic olive green, inside a serene cream colour. All suites can be configured as either a double room or a twin room – or a triple room, to accommodate two adults and a child aged under 12 years. The double beds are king size and extra length! Accommodation for families is created by combining two suites, as four of the suites are interconnecting. The décor has the same feel as the main areas, with splashes of Maasai red adding a local flavour. All suites have a ceiling fan, a mini-bar, a safe and a butler’s lobby!

*Please be aware that we are unable to book this property for families with young children under the age of 6 years, for safety reasons relating to the balconies/decks/walkways.*

ACTIVITIES AT ANGAMA MARA:

There are loads of exciting activities available here, with a personalised approach in place to ensure guests get the most from their stay.

  • Game drives are planned according to what guests would like to see and where they would like to see it! So guides are happy to drive anywhere in the reserve and the Mara Triangle, from close beside the kopje all the way to the Tanzanian border. This is game-rich country, with all Big Five, the wildebeest Great Migration from July to October, and a host of other predators and herbivores! There are impressive numbers of birds too – over 570 species!
  • Another excellent activity is walking safari, led by Maasai naturalists. Guided walks take in verdant forests, open savanna, and even the edge of the Oloololo Escarpment, with guests learning all about the Maasai life and tucking in to a picnic at a well-chosen viewing point.
  • Alternatively, a hot air balloon safari is the perfect way to observe the reserve from up high, taking off at dawn to experience the glorious sunrise over the plains. And guests are invited to get to know the Maasai people by visiting a neighbouring village – a really interesting excursion, highly recommended!
  • Further opportunities to soak up a little culture are offered at Angama Mara itself. The camp is staffed by a lot of Maasai people – and at sunset every evening, Maasai warriors perform their song-and-dance routines in the camp’s boma! There is a craft studio on site too, where guests can learn techniques such as beading. It is this attention to detail that makes Angama Mara really special. From the guiding out in the reserve to the personal service at the very heart of the camp, everyone does their utmost to ensure you feel at ease here.
  • If you would rather burn off the calories, you need only venture to the camp’s gym, which has a full range of equipment and the same amazing views as the rest of the place. Those in need of some pampering relish a visit from the camp’s own masseuse, happy to help you unwind throughout the day. And after the sun has set, take a moment to relax on your deck and stare up at the sky for the ultimate star safari!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
