OVERVIEW:

If you are looking for a traditional bushcamp offering classic safari activities, this camp is pretty much perfect! Kicheche prides itself on responsible use of resources, environment conservation and investment in the local community – and the camp has achieved a Gold Level Eco-rating Certificate by Ecotourism Kenya in recognition of its successes!

ACCESS & LOCATION:

This area is known as Acacia Valley, in honour of the iconic flat-topped thorntrees rising from the grasslands.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT KICHECHE MARA CAMP:

The main areas of Kicheche Mara consist of two tents, one for lounging and one for dining. Both are open fronted, with spectacular views down to the stream and across the valley’s western side. The lounge tent contains well-cushioned wood-framed furniture, positioned around coffee tables strewn with reading matter. There are a few plants too, which contributes to the authentic bushcamp style. The dining tent has an equally classic safari feel, with its large table for communal meals and wildlife artwork on the back walls. There is also a small bar in the dining tent, a great place to relax at the end of a busy day! Breakfasts and lunches are often enjoyed outside, for example as picnics while on game drives.

Kicheche’s guest accommodation comprises just eight tents. These are spaced along the valley with views of the stream and woodland from verandas furnished with a small table and a couple of chairs. All tents contain a double bed, but up to two single beds can be added to create a family unit. There is an authentic style here too, as the interiors use a lot of wood – chunky bedframes, bedside cabinets, occasional tables, open wardrobes and comfy seating. The palette is neutral/earthy for the most part, but a few pillows add some splashes of colour and there are colourful woven mats on the floor. The en-suite facilities are situated at the back of the tent and consist of flush toilet, washbasin and classic safari bucket shower! The running water is on the salty side, but an urn of filtered water is available too.

ACTIVITIES AT KICHECHE MARA CAMP:

Kicheche offers a great range of activities.

  • Game drives take place during early morning and late afternoon, with plenty of flexibility in the timings so guests can choose how many hours they would like to spend in the company of the local wildlife! The Mara North Conservancy boasts all Big Five animals, as well as cheetah, wildcat and huge herds of herbivores – wildebeest, hartebeest, giraffe, gazelle, zebra, to name just a few! Hippos wallow in the Olare Orok River, while monkeys, baboons and bushbabies clamber amid the trees. From July to October, the Great Migration storms through – and from January to March, the Lolta Plains wildebeest amass in the Conservancy to chomp on the short sweet grasses!
  • Walking in the area affords much closer encounters with plant and animal species, while presenting a wonderful opportunity to check out the local birdlife. Particularly keen hikers can even incorporate an overnight stay at Kicheche’s fly camp, to get to know the area really well!
  • Village visits are also available, to learn all about the Maasai way of life and to see the camp’s work in action at the local schools. We recommend taking a trip to the Rhino Sanctuary in Olchoro Oiroua too – and you can also book a dawn hot air balloon safari to see everything from the sky at first light, landing to a champagne breakfast!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
