Kenya Honeymoon Safaris

When it comes to honeymoons, Kenya is an excellent option!

The properties we recommend for creating magic and memorable moments are situated in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, the Greater Mara Conservancies, and the Samburu National Reserve. Renowned for the Great Migration, attracting masses of travellers every year, the Maasai Mara might not seem the obvious choice for the ultimate romantic getaway! However, this area and its conservancies do contain a few camps offering plenty of privacy, well away from the crowds. And the Samburu National Reserve is, quite simply, one of the most spectacular regions in Africa. Amazing memories are guaranteed!

Within the MMNR, we are crazy about Kilima Camp. This property is situated on the western border of the Reserve, at the top of the steep Oloololo Escarpment. One word: views! From camp, you can see for miles over plains and rivers. The guest accommodation consists of 15 tented rooms – whether you select the classic or larger deluxe option, you will feel nicely secluded, as all tents are spaced well apart. You can sit on your private veranda together and watch out for wildlife. If you wish to take part in any activities, there are game drives, walking safaris, horseback safaris, and excursions into the local community. And perhaps the most memorable thing to do here is to take a hot air balloon safari, rising at dawn and descending to a lavish champagne breakfast, a wonderful romantic treat!

Heading out to the Greater Mara Conservancies, we have big love for a couple of top properties – Ol Seki Hemingways Mara and Ngare Serian. Like Kilima, Ol Seki has a sky-high location, in this instance on the end of a Cupid’s arrow-shaped escarpment within the Mara Naboisho Conservancy! The name of the camp means sandpaper tree, a tree symbolising peace and harmony – a stay here seems a promising start to married life! All ten tents are well spaced out along the hillside and very spacious, with a private veranda where you can take in beautiful views across the bushscape. Staff members at Ol Seki provide a first-rate personalised service, ensuring you experience your dream holiday! Activities include morning and evening game drives, bush walks, getting to know the local Maasai herdsmen and their families, and enjoying a hot air balloon safari. And if you fancy safari super size, you can take a trip into the MMNR itself! Ol Seki is a peaceful base from which to explore the game-rich Conservancy and Reserve.

Ngare Serian, our second recommendation in the Greater Mara Conservancies, is pretty peaceful too! The word Serian translates as serene – and of all Serian properties in Kenya, Ngare is perhaps the most tranquil. Situated in the Mara North Conservancy, this camp has a charming riverside location – it is accessed via a swing bridge! With just four tents, this really is a little pocket of paradise. The tents are incredibly spacious – they are often referred to as marquees! There is plenty of room between them too, affording ample privacy. Each boasts a large four-poster bed, luxurious en-suite facilities, and a bathtub built into your veranda, so you can lie back together and enjoy the views! If you can bear to leave your romantic marquee, there are lots of activities on offer here – game drives, guided walks, bush running, fishing, and hikes up the Oloololo Escarpment. And you can even sleep under the stars, at Ngare’s The Nest Treehouse. It is worth mentioning that all groups of guests are assigned their own vehicle, complete with knowledgeable guide.

Leaving the MMNR and its conservancies, we come to the Samburu National Reserve. This is a fantastic safari destination all year round – the meltwater running off majestic Mount Kenya provides reliable water sources for parched animals! The Reserve is also home to the Samburu people – you can visit their villages and learn about their ways of life. Our honeymoon hotspot here is Saruni Samburu, a lovely lodge on top of a red rock in the heartlands of the Kalama Conservancy. Whereas the Reserve can become busy at times, Kalama serves as a quiet retreat for travellers to the region. Among its six guest villas, the property offers a gorgeous Honeymoon Villa, featuring a wrought-iron bed, a private dining area, and a comfortable veranda. For a little extra pampering, you can visit the Samburu Wellbeing Space and indulge in a massage! And if you would like to participate in some safari activities, there is loads to see and do here – game drives in the Conservancy and the Reserve, guided walks, birding, trekking up Mount Ololokwe, and exploring the local caves. You can even fly out to Mount Kenya or Lake Turkana, via helicopter or bi-plane! However you choose to spend your days, we reckon you will have the holiday of a lifetime.

At YZ, we have over a decade’s experience in designing honeymoon itineraries! We pride ourselves on listening to you and altogether coming up with something really special. Just get in touch to find out more!
