Safari and Beach Holidays

Following your exciting safari, why not enjoy a relaxing break amidst the unspoilt sands of the Indian Ocean?

Safari is always the focus of a holiday to Africa – and rightly so! Where else in the world can you see such a variety of ecosystems? From the rolling plains of the Serengeti, stomping ground of the Great Migration, to the thick jungle in Rwanda that is home to the mountain gorillas… nowhere in the world competes with Africa!

However, Africa has so much more to offer than just its amazing game viewing. The continent is home to stunning cities such as Cape Town, spectacular sights like Victoria Falls, and a number of picturesque beaches (check out our blog on a Cape Town or Vic Falls combination safari). Two weeks on safari is too much and you do get safari-ed out, so it only makes sense to take advantage of one of these other elements that Africa has to offer!

Africa’s beaches are often overlooked as people don’t tend to realise how tiring a week on safari can be, what with all the early wake-up calls and late-night stories around the campfires. Whether it is a family holiday or a honeymoon, you never want to finish a safari… yet the thought of flopping on a beach is always welcomed!

Top destinations for safari and beach holidays:

1. Tanzania

Tanzania offers excellent options for a safari and beach holiday, whether on the tranquil Indian Ocean shores of the country or on the tropical sandy beaches of the islands just off the coast, such as Mafia and Pemba. However, the standout island is Zanzibar, which is suited to travellers looking for luxury and mile upon mile of beautiful beaches lined with palm trees and turquoise waters. There are properties here for everyone, from Pongwe and Matlai to Baraza Resort and Spa and Kilindi Zanzibar! However, if you are hoping to continue your holiday focused on nature, then the neighbouring islands (Mafia and Pemba) offer better diving opportunities – and from November through to March, whale sharks move into the area… Pole Pole is the place to be!

2. Kenya

The Kenyan coastline is easily accessible after safari and offers plenty of opportunities to indulge at one of the luxurious resorts that we are happy to recommend. This sort of stay provides the perfect opportunity to recharge your batteries after your early morning game drives!

The likes of Diani in Kenya can easily be reached from one of the country’s safari camps in a day! Diani is the perfect beach destination for the active traveller, with properties such as Waterlovers, which has access to some of the continent’s best windsurfing, diving and kitesurfing!

3. Mozambique

Easily accessible from Nairobi and boasting some of the most fascinating underwater attractions in the world, Mauritius is a destination seemingly made for an idyllic extension to your African safari! Located to the east of Madagascar, amidst the azure waters of the south-west Indian Ocean, this island paradise has direct flights to the African mainland. Boasting the third largest reef in the world and some of the best diving, it presents an exceptional gateway destination, with a range of stunningly located oceanfront properties that can cater to all tastes and needs, whether for families, solo travellers, couples, or honeymooners. Offering luxurious spa retreats, unique birdlife, colonial ruins, golf courses, and dive resorts, the island of Mauritius is a destination where you can be as laidback or as active as you wish!

4. Seychelles

The farther south you head on safari, the little bit more difficult it becomes to include a beach – and this is when Cape Town and Victoria Falls should be considered. However, if you are able to take time between destinations, this opens you up to an array of possibilities – not only the spectacular Zanzibar, Mozambique and Mauritius, but also, for those looking for the highest level of luxury, the Seychelles!

This beautiful unspoiled archipelago with over a hundred islands is simply breathtaking, with warm crystal-clear waters and dramatic peaks. The Seychelles are located 1,000 miles off the east coast of Africa, making this destination an ideal beach break in combination with a safari holiday in Kenya. Spend your days island hopping, snorkelling, and diving, or enhance your paradise experience by pampering yourself with a revitalising treatment at one of the spectacular resorts spas. These offer a range of treatments that will re-energise your body and soul!
