"On the eastern boundary of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, this comfortable mid-range lodge has excellent responsible tourism credentials and lots of character. It is simple and in a busier part of the Mara region, but it is very affordable for those on a lower budget."

OVERVIEW:

Basecamp Maasai Mara is a basic and comfortable camp, ideal for travellers who are happy to eschew luxury in favour of more authentic accommodation. A great place for feeling close to nature! Highly recommended by YZ. The Camp has received many awards, including World Travel Awards Winner! It is also Gold Eco-Rated by Eco Tourism Kenya and since 2011 has been in the TripAdvisor Hall of Fame with a well-deserved Certificate of Excellence.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Located in the Koiyaki Group Ranch, outside the MMNR, it is close to the gate of Talek as well as Talek village.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT BASECAMP MAASAI MARA:

Basecamp Maasai Mara’s communal areas are housed in a spacious open-sided lodge, constructed from natural local materials. The high roofs are made from Kilgoris grass tiles, the structure is wooden, and the floor is fun crazy paving! The building has two storeys. Downstairs, there is the open-plan dining-and-lounge area, with its wooden furniture, comfortable seating, and Migration Bar, while upstairs there is more seating, featuring comfy sofas. Though the décor is simple, this only adds to the natural feel of the lodge. Wherever you decide to relax, the views are breathtaking as you gaze across the Maasai Mara Game Reserve! In the evenings, you can sit around the fire and enjoy sharing stories by starlight in this special part of the world.

There are 12 tents at Basecamp MM. Of these, 11 sleep two, in either twin or double beds, and a family tent sleeps four. All guest accommodation is set up on wooden platforms, well spaced for lots of privacy. As per the main lodge, the roofs are constructed from Kilgoris grass, while wooden pillars support walls of wood and mud, continuing the main building’s natural feel. All tents have a lovely veranda, with hammocks and recliners for relaxing in peace and quiet. Inside, the décor is pleasingly simple, with plenty of storage space for clothes and other belongings. The en-suite facilities include an outdoor shower, a sink built into the side of the room, a composting toilet, and urinal facilities. We love this authentic style!

ACTIVITIES AT BASECAMP MAASAI MARA:

Basecamp MM offers some excellent activities, taking full advantage of its location close to the world-renowned Maasai Mara National Reserve.

  • Whether you set off on a game drive or take a walk across the Camp’s private suspension bridge, which is accessible when the water in the Talek River is low, you are sure to spot an amazing array of animals! You will be able to witness lion, cheetah, leopard, elephant, and loads of other species in their natural habitats. Visit during the Great Migration, which takes place from July to October each year and you will see more than 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra and antelopes as they migrate from the Serengeti to the Mara in search of food and water. The Reserve’s birdlife is also seriously impressive!
  • If you are interested in learning about the local culture, visit the village of Talek, where you will encounter authentic rural life. This really is the place to expand your cultural horizons!
  • Children are welcome and the staff can provide cots – however, there are no highchairs. There is plenty of space for the youngsters to play, but as there is open access to the river the Camp recommends full supervision. There is a club for children – Dorobo – for such activities as bow-and-arrows making and beadwork.

*Although Basecamp MM offers walking safaris, these are operated without firearms and take place in big game areas. So we don't recommend our clients go on these safari walks.

**This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
