This stunning property, set atop a remote ridge in the Borana Conservancy, offers state of the art luxury in the shadow of Mount Kenya. With only six glorious suites, all with their own separate character, exclusivity is the name of the game! Hired as a whole, Sirai House is perfect for groups and families looking for isolated luxury away from the busier parts of Kenya. With world class facilities, dining, safari activities (including horse riding, for which the region is famed), and spectacular 360 views…this private home will take your breath away.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
Sirai House sits within a 250 acre private estate, amid cedar trees and olive groves, in the Borana conservancy: a vast private game reserve in the Laikipia region of Kenya. Its location, on the crest of a hill at the foot of Mount Kenya, means unparalleled views of the snow-capped peaks and out across the grassy plains below. There are also great game concentrations in this region...you can expect to see prides of lion, lots of cheetah, buffalo, zebra, elephant, giraffe and even black and white rhino. The Borana conservancy itself is a vital gateway for animals between Mount Kenya and the semi-desert plains of the north - and one of the last strongholds of black rhino in Africa.
Sirai House is accessed by a 50 minute, light aircraft private charter from Nairobi. On arrival at the airstrip you’ll be collected by one of their (custom built!) 4x4s and game driven across the plains on the 30 minute transfer to the property.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT SIRAI HOUSE:
There are only six suites spread out over a large private estate: all super luxurious, yet very homely in feel. Partly this is down to the wonderful service at Sirai House. On colder evenings they’ll light a fire and leave a hot water bottle tucked under your impossibly-high-thread-count sheets, so the place is lovely and cosy when you return from a sumptuous supper! The rooms all have slightly different features and locations. The Master suite is impossibly nice - the most spacious, and has an infinity pool with stunning views (probably the best bathroom ever!). Suite 2 is closest to the main house and has fantastic views out across the reserve. Suite 3 & 4 have an interlinking drawing room, perfect for shared sundowners or playing games. Suites 5 & 6 are furthest from the main house, again with shared drawing room, and tucked away in the treetops (with secret wooden walkway to a viewing platform). All the rooms are exquisitely composed, with local Kenyan designs, beautiful artefacts, and bathtubs you won’t want to get out of!
The main house doesn’t disappoint - lavish dining options, roaring fires, views as far as the eye can see. The facilities are numerous: a cinema with more than 500 films, a beautiful infinity pool overlooking the valley below, top notch spa and steam, tennis, stables, watering hole with viewing hide. They also have a world class wine cellar!
ACTIVITIES AT SIRAI HOUSE:
There’s a great amount to do at Sirai House. Please note that some of the activities incur extra cost, helicopters for instance. Please contact one of Kenya specialists for more information on what is included with the house rate.
Expertly guided game drives- Borana conservancy and Lewa Downs areas can be covered and offer an excellent range of wildlife. Highlights include – lion, elephant, cheetah, leopard, buffalo, zebra, spotted hyena, wild dog, and lots of other predators and herbivores. As well as the now very rare white and black rhino.
Horseback safaris- This is the best way to get close to the animals in Borana, as they are more relaxed around horses than 4x4s. They have 3 sets of stables and they cater for all levels, beginner to advanced. It really is a special experience; and even for those who think they’ve done a lot of safari, this is a different level of interaction.
Helicopter safari- There are some stunning places to visit beyond the normal range of land vehicles - secluded afternoon picnics all await discovery! Heli-drop to the lakes of Mount Kenya, explore the dunes at Suguta Valley or traverse the rocks at Kenya’s Northern Frontier. Visit Lake Turkana and the volcanic surrounds, with the legendary Jade Sea and its many flamingos.
Walking safaris- Accompanied by an expert guide, as well as an armed scout for your protection. The activity is perfect for travellers who want to get to know the smaller lives of Borana, such as the park’s plants, insects, and hundreds of types of bird. You can occasionally track big game too.
Fly camping- Head out into true wilderness for a night beneath the stars! Sirai will take their service and luxury into the bush. After a walking safari, you will dine under the African sky and sleep in a sand riverbed. Unforgettable.
Night driving- Head out on a torch-lit drive. Always a great experience seeing what goes on in the dark of the night! There are many interesting species to spot – porcupines, bush-babies and aardvarks for example.
*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
