YZ recommends Sirai House for a big group of travellers seeking very high quality accommodation in a wildlife-rich part of Laikipia.

OVERVIEW:
Sirai House has a fabulous location on the lower slopes of majestic Mount Kenya, within Laikipia’s wildlife-rich Borana Conservancy! Privately owned and operated, it is available for exclusive bookings only, accommodating 12 persons. Of the six guest suites, two pairs are able to interconnect, which may be of interest to families. Children of all ages are welcome, and the property is open all year round.

ACCESS & LOCATION:
Private flights to Sirai are available from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, a journey of 50 minutes. This is followed by a road transfer of approximately half an hour.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES:
Sirai’s guest accommodation consists of six guest suites, individually furnished and very well appointed. The largest option is the master suite, a separate house containing comfy bedroom, dressing room, separate seating area with fireplace, study, and en-suite facilities including a marble bathtub. It has private terraces and lawns too, and even an infinity pool – perfect for a refreshing dip while marvelling at the scenery. All the other rooms are very pleasant, also featuring fireplaces, comfy lounges, and well-presented en-suites. Rooms 3 and 4 connect via a shared sitting room, while rooms 5 and 6 are known as the treehouse rooms and hold a lot of appeal for guests who like their interiors on the rustic side! These rooms (5 and 6) connect too, with a lounge in the middle, and their washing facilities feature an outdoor shower apiece.

The house occupies a scenic ridge on the outskirts of beautiful cedar and wild olive forest. It has been constructed using materials sourced locally, so it blends seamlessly into the natural surroundings. Inside, the drawing room is the heart of the house – this is a sumptuous space in which elegant lighting dangles from high ceilings, plush sofas and chairs invite guests to relax and admire amazing views over Borana, and grand sandstone fireplaces ensure everyone keeps warm! Sirai’s dining room is equally impressive, with its long table, smart upright chairs, fireplace, and central chandelier.

After your evening meal, you might like to go through to the billiards room, either to play a spirited game or two, or to lounge by the open fire. Avid readers love spending time in the comfortable library, while fitness fanatics can take to the well-equipped gym! There’s a cinema too, as well as a gallery containing some intriguing artworks. Guests also enjoy use of lovely terraced gardens, a boma with fire-pit, and a swimming pool complete with dining area and bar.

ACTIVITIES:
A fine assortment of activities is available throughout your stay. Wildlife enthusiasts will happily board Sirai’s safari vehicle, which is at guests’ disposal 24 hours per day! The Borana Conservancy covers more than 14,000 hectares and it’s home to a real wealth of wildlife – you can look out for lion, cheetah, black rhino, elephant, giraffe, zebra, and numerous other predators and herbivores. There’s some brilliant birdlife too, including tawny and crowned eagles, guineafowls, hornbills, an astounding five species of bustard, and the long-legged secretary bird. Walking safaris are on offer for guests hoping for some close encounters, in addition to an in-depth look at the conservancy’s insects and plant life. You can saddle up and go horse riding too – Sirai has its own stables!

All levels of experience are accommodated, and trips can vary from a few hours to three or four days. Camping can be arranged as well, with sleeping out under the stars a house speciality. If you would like to venture a little farther afield, helicopter, light aircraft, or bi-plane flights are available! There are many spectacular sights to enjoy in and around Borana, not least Mount Kenya and Laikipia’s northern frontier, and the beautiful lakes of Turkana and Alice. And excursions to Ol Donyo Wasin always prove memorable – here, guests can watch the local people at the Singing Wells, directing their livestock to and from the water source through a variety of songs.
