Wilderness Little Vumbura is owned and operated by Wilderness. This company runs an impressive selection of safari camps and lodges across many parts of Safari Africa, all the while caring for these areas and their communities. Wilderness Little Vumbura is very popular, so we recommend booking your stay well in advance! Neighbouring Wilderness Vumbura Plains may be the flagship of the Vumbura Concession, but this little sibling camp has acquired the better reputation over the years. Rates include accommodation, all meals, all local drinks, twice-daily scheduled camp activities, park fees, and a laundry service. The camp is open all year round.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
The camp is accessed via 45 minutes’ game drive transfer from the local airstrip. It’s situated on a private island within the Vumbura Concession, in the northern reaches of the Okavango Delta.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT WILDERNESS LITTLE VUMBURA:
There are six guest tents, all accessed along raised wooden walkways and positioned in the cool shade of trees. A path leads up to the front door, which opens into the bedroom area. Here, you’ll find a double bed or twin beds with mosquito netting, bedside tables and lighting, and an over-bed fan. The bedroom is open plan to a seating area, featuring a comfy couch and a coffee table, a writing desk and chair, a standing fan, and a tea-and-coffee station. To the right of the bedroom space, there’s a double vanity unit – and beyond that, through a door, you’ll discover a separate toilet and a shower room. Finally, double doors lead out from the seating area onto a private veranda. This is set with a couple of chairs and a small table, and it’s a great spot for relaxing and enjoying spectacular views!
Amazing vistas are also presented from many of Wilderness Little Vumbura’s communal areas. These include the camp’s open-sided lounge, which contains a medley of sofas, chairs, and pouffes around coffee tables, as well as elegant lighting and an adjoining deck. There’s also a pleasant library, constructed around an empty termite mound and offering a great range of wildlife books and magazines. In the dining area, guests can eat together at a long wooden table or opt to dine individually as the table can be divided into smaller units. There’s a buffet counter here too, in addition to a tea-and-coffee station and a self-service bar. Drinks are also enjoyed on Wilderness Little Vumbura’s star deck, a hexagonal structure approached from the dining area via a bridge. The star deck includes a fire-pit, making it the perfect place to meet up with fellow travellers and share your safari stories! And farther inland there’s the camp’s plunge pool, surrounded by inviting sunloungers under parasols.
Usually there’s a minimum age requirement of 12 years, but 6–12s may be accepted – and all ages are welcome when the camp is booked for exclusive use.
ACTIVITIES AT WILDERNESS LITTLE VUMBURA:
The camp offers both land- and water-based activities, although a few of these are dependent on weather conditions and/or guide availability (as indicated by an asterisk below):
Expertly guided game drives- These take place during the morning and the afternoon. Drives cover a lot of ground, traversing the plains of the 60,000-hectares Vumbura Concession to provide some high-quality wildlife viewing. Highlights include four of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo! You can also look out for smaller predators and herbivores, such as cheetah, spotted hyena, wild dog, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and antelopes.
Boating*- Explore the waterways of the concession on a thrilling boat trip! There’s a lot to see, not least hippo, Nile crocodile, and plenty of waterbirds.
Mokoro excursions*- You can also view the wildlife of the waters aboard a mokoro, a dug-out canoe. As the mokoro doesn’t have a motor, you’ll enjoy listening to the mammals, reptiles, and birds all around you.
Guided safari walks*- Set out on foot in the company of a knowledgeable and experienced guide, to observe the concession’s plants, insects, and birdlife. Sometimes it’s possible to track big game too!
Catch-and-release fishing*- Wilderness Little Vumbura has basic equipment available for guest use. You could spend an entire afternoon fishing the waterways around camp, catching-and-releasing the likes of pike and bream.
Helicopter trips over the Okavango Delta- Also incurring an additional charge, helicopter flights are another wonderful way of experiencing the Delta from on high.
Photo hub*- Go on safari with an Olympus photographer, who will ensure you’ll leave camp with some amazing photos!
*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
