"The new Sandibe is nothing short of exceptional. Located in one of the very best game-viewing areas in Botswana, this super-luxury camp sets the standards across the country. Expensive for sure, but well worth it if it can be afforded. Shoulder seasons and low seasons are very good value!"

OVERVIEW:

Owned and operated by &Beyond, Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge provides high-standard accommodation, service, dining, and wildlife viewing – and it has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor! A stay here is usually booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, all safari activities, park fees, transfers between the lodge and the local airstrip, and a laundry service. Children of all ages are welcome but incur a reduced rate – please contact us for details.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The lodge is situated in a private concession within the Chitabe region of northern Botswana, close to the wildlife-rich Moremi Game Reserve. It’s surrounded by wild palms and fig trees, with a backdrop of floodplains and views over a channel from each suite. Scheduled flights are available from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Maun, and from Jo’burg to Kasane, followed by a light aircraft flight to Chitabe airstrip. The final part of the journey is made via game drive transfer.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT SANDIBE OKAVANGO SAFARI LODGE:

Guest accommodation consists of 12 air-conditioned suites, including one family unit. Constructed mostly out of timber, these blend beautifully into the bushscape. Two short flights of steps ascend to the entrance door, which opens out onto a spacious deck complete with plunge pool! Sliding doors lead into each of the interior areas – the bedroom, the washroom, and the lounge. The bedroom contains a king-size bed or twin beds, bedside lighting, and a large vanity unit with twin mirrors. The vanity unit functions as a dressing table with stool on one side, and as a stand with twin washbasins on the other side. En-suite facilities also comprise a separate toilet, an open shower with skylight, and an outdoor shower on the deck. The washroom has a walk-in wardrobe too, which is ready-stocked with dressing gowns, slippers, insect spray, and a hairdryer. There’s a safe in here as well. The lounge area, located through the bedroom, features comfy seating, a cosy fireplace, and a mini-bar. The bedroom can be warmed at night by closing the shutters that run its length – a clever addition! Something else we really like about the suites is the nifty hatch from the bedroom, where staff can place a tray of tea or coffee every morning. The family suite is effectively two suites joined together, and it can sleep a maximum of two adults and three children.

The communal lodge at Sandibe is modelled on one of the Okavango Delta’s own residents – the pangolin! Featuring carefully placed timber shingles that resemble the pangolin’s scaly exterior, this structure is accessed from the guest suites along sandy pathways. Inside, there are several levels – and due to the lodge’s curved wooden support beams and open front, the general feeling is of being on a ship! The lounge area contains a curved sofa, a hanging chair, a fireplace, and a few occasional tables, while the dining space offers a selection of tables and upright chairs. There’s also a library, a well-stocked bar, and an interactive kitchen where you can get involved with meal prep. Delicious food and drink can be enjoyed both inside and outside, on Santibe’s deck and within the ground-level boma. Other amenities include a safari shop, a gym, and a spa. Keep-fit fans will appreciate the good range of equipment in the gym, while anyone in need of pampering will relish a massage treatment – bliss!

ACTIVITIES AT SANDIBE OKAVANGO SAFARI LODGE:

Sandibe offers an exciting variety of activities – game drives, bush walks, helicopter flights, and &Beyond’s WILDChild programme.

  • Expertly guided game drives are available during the morning and also afternoon into evening. The lodge’s private concession covers some 22,500 hectares of floodplains, woodlands, and islands within rivers. Among the wildlife species you can expect to see are four of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo – as well as cheetah, hyena, wild dog, hippo, giraffe, zebra, and antelopes such as sitatunga and red lechwe. Come nightfall, you might catch a glimpse of a serval, or a pangolin!
  • Birding across the concession is thrilling, featuring a number of specials – white-backed vulture, grey go-away bird, and the vibrant lilac-breasted roller. Bush walks from the lodge offer amazing opportunities to explore the smaller lives of the concession, in the company of a specialist walking guide.
  • For a bird’s-eye view over the Delta, you can take to the skies in a helicopter and marvel at the region’s network of plains, lagoons, and islands.
  • And there’s plenty of things for kids to do too, thanks to the WILDChild programme. Tracking, arts and crafts, even making bows-and-arrows… if you come here as a family, you can be sure the little ones will be happily occupied!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
