“Kiri Camp is situated along one of the most beautiful waterways in the Okavango, in the remote western side of Machaba Safaris’ private concession. This remote location guarantees high levels of exclusivity, and the camp is surrounded by vast seasonal floodplains. Machaba is doing great things in the industry and Kiri is shaping up to be one of the company’s very best camps.”

OVERVIEW:

Kiri Camp is owned and run by Machaba Safaris. This company, which prides itself on welcoming clients to ‘the unedited Africa’, presently operates 11 safari camps and lodges across Botswana and Zimbabwe. Kiri is an excellent option for travellers who want to get well off the beaten track, and it combines nicely with either or both of Machaba’s other properties in the Delta – Gomoti Plains and Machaba Camp – or with the Zimbabwe properties. Accommodation at Kiri is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, all activities, transfers between camp and the local airstrip, and a laundry service. The camp is open all year.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp is accessed via 10 minutes’ road transfer from the local airstrip. It’s situated close to the Kiri river, within a private concession in the southern region of the Okavango Delta. This is a lovely location, featuring a grove of large jackalberry trees.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT KIRI CAMP:

Guest accommodation consists of ten luxury tents, including two tents for family use. Constructed from canvas, reeds, and wood, all have been designed to have a low impact on the environment. Each is raised above ground level on wooden decking, maximising your views over the spectacular floodplains in front of the camp! As Kiri is fairly new, no one from Yellow Zebra has visited yet, but based on our experiences of staying at other Machaba properties we anticipate that every standard tent will offer a very comfortable bedroom, with a well-appointed washroom. The family tent will have an additional bedroom for children. We’ll bring you more information as soon as we can.

The communal areas at Kiri Camp are housed in a lodge building, accessed from the guest tents via natural walkways. They include a pleasant lounge with library, a dining area, a bar, and a curio shop. Again, we’ll provide further details as soon as possible. The communal lodge is also an elevated structure, making for amazing views! A spa therapist is on hand to offer treatments such as massages and facials in the privacy of your own room. Finally, there’s a swimming pool, ideal for relaxation in between activities here.

*For families with children under the age of 6 years, we always request tents positioned low off the ground

ACTIVITIES AT KIRI CAMP:

The camp provides a great range of activities, all based in its private concession:

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - As mentioned, Kiri is situated close to the Kiri river, and it’s not far from the Okavango Delta’s Boro river too. All the water in the area naturally attracts a wealth of wildlife, and game drives are great for seeing the resident mammals, birds, and more. You can look out for all Big Four – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo – as well as numerous smaller predators and herbivores, and ample birdlife. The Kiri concession is especially well known for its lion-and-buffalo interactions, and wild dog, so rarely seen in other parts of Safari Africa, thrive here. Please note, a private vehicle must be booked by any group including a child or children aged under 6 years. Drives take place during the early morning and late afternoon into early evening.
  • Night drives

    - Vehicle safaris by night are available too! Starting off after dinner, in the company of a knowledgeable guide, you’ll have a lot of fun spotting the Kiri concession’s nocturnal wildlife – for example, leopard, genet, civet, porcupine, and the charming pangolin.
  • Walking safaris

    - This activity has a minimum age requirement of 12 years, and it’s only available when a suitably qualified guide is in camp. Walks are fantastic for anyone interested in scrutinising the smaller lives of the Delta – the plants, insects, and birdlife. They’re offered in the morning.
  • Boat trips

    - The Kiri river is navigable by big boats, providing opportunities for you to get to know the wildlife of the waterways – hippo, Nile crocodile, and an abundance of waterbirds! This is an afternoon pastime, and its availability depends on water levels.
  • Mokoro excursions

    - A minimum age requirement of 12 years applies to these excursions, and they’re dependent on water levels too. A mokoro is a dug-out canoe. As it has no motor, safarists are able to enjoy close encounters with the wildlife. You can also enjoy watching various big game species quenching their thirst on the banks of the rivers.
  • Fishing

    - So far, Machaba hasn’t provided any specific information about fishing in the concession, but we imagine its availability depends on the season and it’s offered on a catch-and-release basis only.
