When To Visit Okavango Delta:
“My favourite camp in the Jao Reserve for game viewing. With access to Hunda Island, this great small camp has all the water activities that Jao is famous for but also has good ‘big game’ viewing… a rarity in Jao.”

OVERVIEW:

Tubu Tree is owned and operated by Wilderness Safaris, but it has the feeling of an owner-run camp – we love it at YZ! Nicely isolated from other properties and offering a friendly atmosphere and great game viewing, Tubu really is something special. If you’re travelling out of peak flood season May to September, you could consider splitting your stay between this camp and Little Vumbura, Kwara, or Little Kwara, as the latter properties provide water-based activities during this time. Accommodation at Tubu is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, all local drinks, twice-daily scheduled camp activities, park fees, and a laundry service. The camp is open throughout the year.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp is usually accessed via 10 minutes’ road transfer from the local airstrip. It’s situated on Hunda Island, within the Jao Reserve. This is one of the most beautiful locations in the Okavango Delta!

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT TUBU TREE CAMP:

Guest accommodation consists of just eight tents. These are raised high off the ground on wooden decks and linked along wooden walkways through the trees. Made out of canvas and wood, the tents are modest and unpretentious – yet very comfortable too! Entering a standard tent through sliding doors, you’ll find a double bed, bedside lighting on the headboard, a writing desk and chair, and a comfy seating area. The en-suite facilities are set out behind the headboard, and they comprise flush toilet, twin washbasins, and shower. There’s an outdoor shower as well! Additional tent amenities include mosquito netting, a standing fan, a tea-and-coffee station, and an electronic safe. On the deck, there are two chairs and a small table – this is a lovely spot to relax and enjoy your views over seasonal floodplains! The family unit is made up of two tents, connected by a shared lounge and spacious veranda. Each bedroom has its own washroom, featuring indoor and outdoor showers.

Tubu Tree’s communal spaces are accessed from the guest tents via the same adventurous wooden walkways. In the lounge, there are well-cushioned sofas, a selection of small tables for drinks, and shelves full of reading material, all beneath very elegant lighting! Move across to the dining area, and you’ll come across two further glamorous light fittings, this time over a long table complete with candelabra, where everyone eats together. At the front of camp, there’s a well-stocked bar, constructed from a sausage tree. From all of these areas, guests enjoy spectacular views, not least of passing wildlife! The camp also has a plunge pool, with various seating set up alongside. And finally, there’s a fire-pit, where guests gather for pre-dinner drinks and chat about their day on safari.

ACTIVITIES AT TUBU TREE CAMP:

The camp offers a thrilling range of activities, listed below. Please note, the availability of some of these depends on weather conditions and/or guide availability (as indicated by an asterisk).

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - The Jao Reserve covers 60 square kilometres of seasonal floodplains, permanent wetlands, and of course dry islands such as Hunda, which is the largest island in the reserve. Drives take place during the morning and the afternoon, offering exciting opportunities to view a wealth of wildlife! Among the highlights here are four of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo – and smaller mammals including cheetah, spotted hyena, wild dog, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and all sorts of antelopes.
  • Night drives

    - Vehicle safaris by night are also enjoyed in the presence of a knowledgeable and experienced guide. Guests set off after sundowners, with the guide’s spotlight revealing species including civet, genet, porcupine, and the delightful pangolin!
  • Boating*

    - You can have a lot of fun exploring the reserve’s waterways on a boat trip! There’s so much to see, not least hippo, Nile crocodile, and abundant waterbirds.
  • Mokoro excursions*

    - Why not view the wildlife of the waters from aboard a mokoro, a dug-out canoe? As the mokoro doesn’t have a motor, you’ll be able to listen to the mammals, reptiles, and birds all around you.
  • Guided walks*

    - Set out on foot from camp, to learn all about Jao’s plants, insects, and vibrant birdlife. Sometimes it’s possible to track big game too!
  • Catch-and-release fishing*

    - Tubu Tree offers hire of basic equipment for guest use. You could spend an entire afternoon fishing the waterways around camp, catching-and-releasing the likes of pike and bream.
  • Star-bed sleep-outs

    - Approximately 20 minutes’ drive from camp, there’s an elevated platform hide that can sleep a maximum of four safarists. This is the setting for Tubu Tree’s star-bed sleep-out! If you’re interested in this sort of night out, staff are happy to arrange it for you, with a little notice.
  • Helicopter trips

    - This activity incurs an extra cost, but we think it’s worth it. The Delta is a place of astonishing beauty and diversity, and soaring over its waters, savanna, woods, and forests is a truly memorable experience.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
