"A really interesting property due to the location alone. Guaranteeing game viewing that’s of a similar quality to Khwai, Sable Alley is quieter and away from the crowds. A great option at this price bracket."

OVERVIEW:

Sable Alley opened in 2017. It’s owned and operated by Natural Selection, a relatively new company founded by four friends with over a hundred years’ guiding experience in total! Natural Selection specialises in providing thrills, and their camps and lodges are perfect for adventurous travellers. The price of your stay at Sable Alley includes accommodation, all meals, most activities, a selection of drinks, and a laundry service. The camp welcomes guests all year round.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Khwai Private Reserve is situated in the north-east region of the Okavango Delta, next to the Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park. Sable Alley can be accessed via light aircraft flight from Maun to Kasana, lasting 30 minutes, followed by a 1-hour flight to Khwai airstrip. Sable Alley sits on the banks of a beautiful lagoon.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT SABLE ALLEY:

Guest accommodation consists of 12 tents – nine with a double bed or twin beds, two for family use, and one designed for honeymooners. All are raised above ground level on wooden stilts, and they are well sheltered by a sturdy canvas roof and tall trees along the bank. Accessed through sliding doors, the interiors are super-spacious – each tent boasts 600 square feet of floor space! The bed or beds back onto a tall timber room divider, behind which is a chunky vanity unit with twin washbasins, twin mirrors over, and shelving for towels. The washing area also includes a separate flush toilet and a separate shower, with additional shelving and hanging space between them. There’s an outside shower too! The bedroom space benefits from bedside tables and lighting, end-of-bed/s seating, a writing desk, and amazing views through wide window panes. The décor is described as Afro-chic, a vibrant combination of materials and patterns. Out front, you can relax on your private veranda and enjoy vistas across the lagoon. The family unit is created by connecting two of the tents, and the honeymoon accommodation has a lovely secluded location – and an outside bathtub!

Wooden walkways link the guest tents to the communal lodge at Sable Alley. This is a classic timber, wood, and thatch structure, also elevated above the ground. Inside, you’ll find a lavish lounge, featuring comfortable chairs around coffee tables, books, wildlife artwork, and chandeliers! There’s a dining area too, and a well-stocked bar. The camp provides a light breakfast, brunch after the morning activity, afternoon tea, and three-course dinner complete with traditional singing and dancing at least once per week. Guests can tuck in to delicious food and drink on the lodge’s deck too, which is fantastic for spotting the lagoon wildlife – hippo, elephant, and buffalo are just three highlights here. Additionally, there’s a sun deck set with sunloungers, adjacent to the camp’s swimming pool. A few steps lead down to the fire-pit area, a great space for getting to know your fellow travellers and talking about all the things you’ve seen while on safari!

**Please be aware that the swimming pool here has no depth markings or 'No Diving' signs, so take care before you jump in!**

ACTIVITIES AT SABLE ALLEY:

Sable Alley offers an exciting mix of safari activities – game drives, game walks, boat trips, and mokoro excursions.

  • The game drives take place during morning, afternoon, and evening, and are an excellent opportunity to view the wildlife of the 2,000 square kilometres Khwai Private Reserve! Just a few species you can expect to encounter are lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo – four of the Big Five – as well as cheetah, wild dog, hippo, baboon, impala, roan, and of course the sable antelope after which the property is named.
  • The birding is impressive too, with specials such as bat-hawk, cuckoo hawk, long-crested eagle, and rosy-throated longclaw.
  • Guided walks along the river are highly recommended for spotting a wealth of waterbirds, as well as big game coming to drink.
  • Boat trips and mokoro excursions are ideal for anyone interested in observing Khwai’s wildlife from the water – a very different experience from seeing it on land. Please note, the availability of river activities depends on water levels, so if you’re keen to go boating it’s well worth mentioning this to your safari specialist so we can suggest the best times to visit the camp. The minimum age requirement for mokoro excursions is 13 years, and if you wish to take a game drive with youngsters aged 6–12 you’ll need to book a private vehicle at extra cost.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
