"Shinde Footsteps camp delivers one of the most authentic safari experiences that you can find in Botswana. With only three comfortable tents, this is the kind of small-scale traditional camp that we love. If you are adventurous and would like a walking safari in the Okavango, look no further. For families, the camp offers the exclusive-use 'Young Explorers' safari, which includes activities designed with the whole family in mind."

OVERVIEW:

This excellent little camp from Ker & Downey has recently been refurbished (while retaining its rustic charm!) and remains a wonderful remote option away from the busier parts of the Delta. As the name suggests, there’s an emphasis on walking, although the camp’s location makes for a wide range of wet and dry safari activities. As there are only three tented suites and one family unit, only six guests can stay here at any one time, and all staff are dedicated to keeping your safari a really intimate experience! With barefoot sandy main areas, a welcoming team, and an adjacent hippo pool providing a delightful chorus, this is a warm, reliable, traditional safari camp. The phenomenal density of wildlife in the Delta often means prices can be quite high, but Shinde Footsteps offers amazing value, combined with great guiding, delicious food, and a wealth of activities. It’s an ideal place for an exclusive-use group or a multi-generational family looking for an adventurous safari and exceptional walking in one of the best game areas in Africa.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Set in woodland on the water’s edge of the Shinde Concession in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, the camp is able to offer the full complement of wet and dry safari activities, with walking being a real highlight here. With the annual flooding of the Delta, a natural freshwater oasis is created and wildlife is drawn in from miles around. You can expect to see a diverse and spectacular array of animals, including elephant, wild dog, hyena, lion, leopard, giraffe, kudu, zebra, and of course your resident neighbours the hippos! It’s also a haven for a magnificent variety of birdlife and some special, semi-aquatic species such as the sitatunga.

The camp is accessed by scheduled light aircraft into Shinde’s local airstrip. From here, it’s a 45–90 minute drive to camp, depending on the current water levels, and on what game you encounter along the way. You may even journey by mokoro for parts of the trip if the water is very high – it’s always a great adventure at Shinde Footsteps!

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT SHINDE CAMP:

Shine Footsteps is set up amidst the cool shade of trees and adjacent to a thriving lagoon, home to a resident hippo pod. The main tent is a simple canvas structure with a bar, comfortable seating, and dining area. It’s open-sided on three sides to make the most of the views, and you can often see local residents wading past! Typically for a camp that focuses supremely on the safari, the firepit here is the hub at sundowners – there’s always so much to discuss about what you’ve seen during the day. And as the first stars begin to fill the vast skies above, there’s al-fresco dining with great food sourced locally and prepared by the chef. Keen photographers will enjoy the new photo editing suite, furnished with desks and chairs, charging ports and storage cabinets, to ensure the safekeeping of camera equipment.

Guest accommodation consists of four Meru-style tents on raised decking, each with its own covered veranda with a table and chairs. This is a great spot to relax and enjoy the scenery between safari activities. You can choose bed configurations of either twin, double, or the family room, which comprises two bedrooms and a shared bathroom. The interiors are simple but classic, and every tent has ample storage space, mesh windows to keep the mozzies out, and snug rugs on the floor to make you feel at home. The en-suite facilities include indoor and outdoor showers and porcelain washbasin. It’s very tasteful and simple, all you really need after a long day witnessing some of nature’s finest displays!

ACTIVITIES AT SHINDE CAMP:

The camp is well placed to offer a really broad range of safari activities, with both wet and dry options on offer almost year round for exploring this breathtaking, diverse environment. Notably high quality walking safaris are possible here, which is a rarity in the Delta. Please note that walking usually has a 12-year age limit (with 16 years for the more challenging routes), although little nature walks around camp as part of the Young Explorers programme gives great flexibility, and staff members are brilliant at accommodating the needs of younger children.

  •  Expertly guided game drives

    - Two game sessions per day are available, during the morning and the late afternoon. It’s possible to do a full day trip and go further afield, if others wish to join (just in terms of vehicle numbers and availability). Among the highlights are lion, leopard, elephant, hyena, and buffalo. You can look out for smaller predators such as jackal, serval, civet, honey badger, and the rare wild dog, while the large herbivore collection features giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and an assortment of antelopes.
  • Walking safaris

    - Why not head out into the bush with a specially trained armed guide? You don’t need any experience, and the length of walk may be determined by the wishes of your group. As well as animal tracking and enjoying the area’s phenomenal birdlife, you’ll take a closer look at the concession’s insects and plant life. Different levels and distances are possible, depending on the ages of your group. Please note, the minimum age requirement for classic walking safari is 12 years.
  • Night drives

    - You can also head out at night, when all the big predators come out to hunt in the concession. It’s always an unforgettable experience, watching what goes on in the darkness! You might see porcupines, genets, civets, bush-babies, and occasionally a larger predator with its prey.
  • Boating and fishing

    - The boating safaris here are spectacular. See elephants wading through the waterways, in addition to hippos, crocs, and a plethora of birdlife. The Okavango Delta has some of the best boating in Africa. Fishing is also an option and can be seasonal, and though it’s not for everyone, plucking a catfish from the Delta can be quite a thrill. The camp operates a catch-and-release policy.
  • Mokoro canoes

    - This activity is very much the walking safari of the water! You will be able to hear and see much more as you silently glide through the endless water channels of the Delta. It’s a great chance to meet some of the smaller animals, such as frogs and birds, and get a closer look at the flora. Canoeing is best from June to September, when the water is at its highest, and each canoe can accommodate a couple, plus your poler.
  •  Young Explorers programme

    - Ker & Downey can offer a specialist family guide, providing age-appropriate engaging activities and flexible schedules to suit your needs. This means all the family can experience things together. The camp needs to be booked on an exclusive-use basis to activate this fantastic adventure. Do chat with one of our specialists to find out more.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
