Botswana Solo Safari Holidays

Botswana is a great destination for a solo traveller. We operate a number of trips specifically for this category, making the best of the country and, most importantly, keeping prices reasonable.

The majority of our solo traveller safaris to Botswana are based on one of two factors. We design itineraries around lodges charging no (or only a small) single supplement or we suggest trips that have set-date departures, where solo travellers can join a group and thereby get great value.

As anyone who has travelled solo to Africa knows, one of the most crushing issues is the cost. Africa is an expensive destination anyway, and Botswana is probably the most expensive destination of all. So when you include an extra 50 per cent due to travelling solo, this often makes the cost prohibitive. We have noticed that some companies support the solo traveller, whereas others avoid dealing with them deliberately, preferring to focus on getting two people in a room (and subsequently making more money!) than looking after the solo traveller.

&Beyond Africa is our favourite company for solo travellers as they do not charge a single supplement, making some of the country’s most luxurious camps great value for money – as affordable as much more rustic options. Our favourites of these are Sandibe, Chobe Under Canvas and Savute Under Canvas, as well as Nxabega. We avoid the most luxurious camps due to their focus on the honeymoon market and private dining.

Wilderness Safaris are also a good company for solo travellers. Not only do they offer a relatively good price on their camps (approximately a further 25 per cent single supplement), but they also have a number of set-date group departures and overland trips that give great value for money.

Kwando Safaris offer a single supplement that is approximately 30 per cent over the per person rate. This is not bad value, as it opens up the country’s most adventure-focused yet equally high-end camps to the solo traveller.

Great Plains Conservation offers the solo traveller approximately the same surcharge as Wilderness Safaris and Kwando Safaris, making this company relatively good value. We would recommend Duba Explorers Camp and Selinda due to the sociable vibe in camp – with only four rooms, Zarafa is an experience focused more on couples.

Sanctuary Lodges put a 50 per cent surcharge on their camps, making them poor value for money compared to elsewhere. We do not recommend these camps for solo travellers as we think many companies offer better value.
