The South Luangwa has long been respected as the finest walking park in Africa. This excellent trip combines the game-rich Mfuwe area with one of the best-value walking experiences in the park. Expect leopard on tap and wild authenticity!

The location of our value trip is Zambia’s excellent South Luangwa National Park. An itinerary of two parts, it begins in the Mfuwe area of the park and comes to a grand finale in the remote south! Both areas are rich in wildlife. The properties we use are small and intimate camps with a rustic flavour, offering classic game drives and walking safaris.

Your adventure starts at Kafunta River Lodge. This is a classic safari lodge on the edge of the South Luangwa, with access via pontoon into the national park! After that, you will stay at Kafunta Island Bush Camp. This too is a classic property, with just five bush chalets and situated in a very remote part of the park.

*Please note, this is just one example of a trip we could design for you. We tailor-make safari holidays that take you to the real Africa – no readymade tours or set departures. Do get in touch with one of our experts today to start creating your bespoke itinerary!*

Days 1–3 South Luangwa National Park (Mfuwe)

On Day 1 of your trip, you will fly out to the Mfuwe sector of the South Luangwa National Park. Here, you will stay at Kafunta River Lodge. This property has a lovely location overlooking the Luangwa river! Its main lodge is a traditional thatch-roof structure, containing a comfortable lounge, dining space, and bar. These areas flow out on to a deck, where you can sit and admire views of the river as well as a busy waterhole. Meals are often enjoyed al fresco on the deck, and the lodge also has a fire-pit, an infinity pool, a gym, a spa, and the Luangwa Valley’s only natural hot tub! This tub, created from a geothermal source in the property’s grounds, is ideal for a little relaxation after a day in the South Luangwa. Each of the eight guest chalets is super-comfy too, featuring a private veranda for river views. You can also take in the scenery from the lodge’s hide, underneath the deck – this provides great photo opportunities! Activities on offer include day and night game drives, and walking safaris. The South Luangwa is accessed via a pontoon, or guests are driven into the park through the main gate at Mfuwe. There is loads of wildlife to see in this area of Zambia – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo (four of the Big Five!), in addition to numerous other predators and herbivores. And there are over 450 bird species!

Board basis and activities:
Full-board accommodation including all meals and snacks, standard drinks (excluding premium brands), game drives, walking safaris, national park entry fees, Conservation & Community levy, transfer from Mfuwe Airport, and a laundry service.

Days 4–6 South Luangwa National Park (South)

For the second part of your trip, you will transfer by road to Kafunta Island Bush Camp – this is a three-hour journey south through the South Luangwa. As you might have guessed from the name, Island Bush Camp is the sister camp of River Lodge! It too is very pleasantly positioned, on the banks of the Luangwa river amidst a grove of ancient mahogany trees. The communal lodge is similar in style, with lounge, dining space, and bar all under thatch. The views are spectacular here, including not only the river but also the Chindeni hills in the east and the western escarpment of Muchinga. Island Bush Camp has a fire-pit too, and outdoor dining areas. Its guest accommodation consists of just five bush chalets, each set on a platform along the river bank. Every chalet is well appointed, with a snug double bed, walk-in mosquito nets, paraffin lights, and fabulous open-air en-suite facilities featuring flush toilet, washbasin, and bucket shower. The main activity here is walking safaris, but game drives are also available – and the 4 by 4 is often used to transport guests to particularly remote areas! Concentrations of wildlife around camp are seriously impressive – huge herds of herbivores and plenty of predators too. And don’t forget your binoculars if you’re a keen birder, as there are hundreds of feathery friends here!
