Days 5–9 MADIKWE GAME RESERVE

leopard, madikwe game reserve, malaria free family safari

On the fifth day of this family safari, you’ll leave Lawhill Luxury Apartments and return to Cape Town’s international airport in order to fly to Madikwe Game Reserve (via Johannesburg) to stay at Tuningi Safari Lodge for four nights. This property has a lovely location amidst the rolling hills in the west of the reserve. All buildings are constructed from timber, stone, and thatch for the ultimate safari feel! The communal areas are comfortable and spacious, featuring relaxing lounges, pleasant open-air dining spaces, a fire-pit, and a swimming pool. All guest accommodation is connected to the main lodge via wooden walkways and includes two family suites. Each has two en-suite double bedrooms, a kitchenette, a dining area, and a living room that flows out onto a delightful deck. From here, and also from the lodge, you can watch out for the local wildlife. There’s a very busy waterhole in front of camp! Activities from Tuningi focus on game drives and walking safaris – unfortunately age restrictions apply, but the lodge prides itself on providing all sorts of things to keep children busy throughout the day. Youngsters aged 5 years and under can go on their own ‘bumbles’, a special type of game drive. Treasure hunts are available too, as is clay modelling, drawing, and T-shirt painting. Come dinner time, the kids get their own experience of dining in Tuningi’s traditional boma with a chef, or they can make their own pizzas and cupcakes. A nanny is present throughout these activities and the rangers are great at showing children around the reserve!
