"Shinde Footsteps camp delivers one of the most authentic safari experiences that you can find in Botswana. With only three comfortable tents, this is the kind of small-scale traditional camp that we love. If you are adventurous and would like a walking safari in the Okavango, look no further. For families, the camp offers the exclusive-use 'Young Explorers' safari, which includes activities designed with the whole family in mind."

OVERVIEW:

We think Footsteps is a really exciting little camp, perfect for travellers who would like to experience the remoter parts of the Okavango Delta!  It offers two types of safari: ‘Footsteps Across the Delta’ for adults, and ‘Young Explorers’ for families. Usually the camp only accepts guests aged 16 years and older, but when a family makes a booking on an exclusive basis children from age 7 are allowed. Footsteps is owned and operated by Ker & Downey, one of Botswana’s best safari companies! Their portfolio includes the fabulous Shinde, Shinde Enclave, and Kanana in the Delta, as well as Okuti in the Moremi Game Reserve.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Footsteps Camp is situated in the Shinde Concession, within the wildlife-rich Okavango Delta. Footsteps’ location is a very remote part of the Delta, and the emphasis is on adventure and exploration! Visitors fly in to the Shinde airstrip from Maun, and Footsteps is about 40 minutes away. On the route in to camp, you can enjoy looking out for wildlife – and depending on the time of year, it may be necessary to board a mokoro for part of the journey!

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT SHINDE FOOTSTEPS CAMP:

Footsteps is set up in the cool shade of trees and adjacent to a lagoon. Its mess tent is a simple canvas structure with a bar and dining area. Open on three sides, the mess tent provides lovely views over the lagoon! Its dining table is surrounded by director’s chairs and its bar is made of wood. The camp also offers outdoor seating, positioned to make the most of the views. Finally, there is a fire-pit, where guests gather at morning and evening to share safari stories and enjoy some great al-fresco dining!

Guest accommodation at Footsteps consists of three Meru-style tents. Each has a pleasant covered veranda with a table and a couple of chairs. Here you can relax and marvel at the beautiful scenery! Inside, every tent has twin beds, ample storage space, mesh windows to keep out the biters, and snug rugs on the floor so you feel at home. The en-suite facilities are situated through a flap at the back of the tent. They comprise flush toilet, washstand, and nice hot bucket shower!

ACTIVITIES AT SHINDE FOOTSTEPS CAMP:

  • Two types of safari experience are available here. Footsteps Across the Delta is for adults, while Young Explorers is designed for families. Each fills four days. Across the Delta focuses on walking safari, with one day allocated to other activities such as a mokoro excursion, fishing, or a game drive.
  • The family programme involves making bows and arrows, identifying tracks around camp, learning to cook over a fire, and even playing football with camp staff!
  • Parents are welcome to wander farther afield on guided walks and vehicle safaris, confident that the youngsters are being well looked after and entertained. This region of the Delta has a real wealth of wildlife, including lion, hyena, wild dog, elephant, giraffe, zebra, hippos, crocs, and many antelope species. The bird count is impressive too!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
