"As Chief's is Sanctuary’s flagship Botswana property, it carries a hefty price tag but offers a very good game-viewing experience. Refurbished in 2016 to a very high level, this is a camp that will claim to give Mombo a run for its money. I believe it doesn't quite make it, but a great option nonetheless."

OVERVIEW:

If super-lux safari is for you, then definitely take a look at Chief's Camp. The property is still owned by Sanctuary Retreats, a luxury safari company with an impressive portfolio spanning seven African countries. Wherever the company operates, it aims to provide an authentic boutique experience – and its motto is, ‘Luxury, naturally.’

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The location of Chief’s Camp remains the same – on Chief’s Island, at the centre of the Moremi Game Reserve, within the beautiful Okavango Delta. The property has its own airstrip, accessed from Kasane (1hr 30mins), Maun (25 mins), and other Sanctuary offerings Stanley’s Camp and Baines Camp (15 mins each). Chief’s occupies the north-western side of the island.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT CHIEF'S CAMP:

The site is surrounded by tall trees and boasts amazing views out over the Delta. The communal areas consist of a lounge, a larger dining room, a bar, a library, and a pizza deck complete with pizza oven. There is also an orientation room, where the camp’s guides provide further information about the Delta prior to taking guests on game drives.

Guest accommodation at Chief’s Camp comprises ten larger pavilions. The pavilions are positioned either side of the main lodge, spaced well apart for plenty of privacy. All are equipped with a fan and air conditioning. They also have a private dining area each, as well as a Nespresso machine, complimentary Wi-Fi, an outside seating area, and a plunge pool. The bathrooms contain flush toilet, twin washbasins, big bathtub, and lovely outdoor shower. All pavilions boast superb views of the Delta – ‘Luxury, naturally’ indeed! The suite, named after Abercrombie & Kent’s CEO Geoffrey Kent, is every inch as sumptuous as the pavilions. Designed to sleep 4–6 persons, the suite has a kitchen, indoor lounge, bar, boma with fire pit, and delightful deck. Guests have a private safari vehicle with private guide, in addition to a waiter and housekeeper!

ACTIVITIES AT CHIEF'S CAMP:

Game drives take place during the morning and afternoon, always in the company of a very knowledgeable guide.

  • The Okavango Delta is one of the best locations in the world for viewing wildlife, with plains chock-full of zebra, antelope, buffalo, all enticing plenty of lion! A number of leopard prides are present too, plus hyena and genet. Other regulars include elephant, giraffe, monkey, and baboon, while wild dog make an occasional appearance.
  • Keen birders are in for a real treat, as the region is home to hundreds of resident and migrant species, with highlights such as the smart secretary bird, the pink-backed pelican, and the hefty kori bustard!
  • Mokoro excursions are possible from May to December, though every year varies depending on the arrival of the flood. Cruising quietly through the water provides excellent opportunities to see hippo and crocodile! This is a great way to watch out for wildlife from a completely different angle.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
