"Located in the north of the Moremi Game Reserve, Okuti offers an undeniably high quality of game viewing. The prices are also appealing due to the fact Okuti is not in a private reserve; however, the lack of walking and night drives is an issue for some. Excellent game viewing and price nonetheless."

Okuti is owned and run by Ker & Downey Botswana. This company specialises in providing superb safaris while striving to conserve the local wildlife. Other high-quality properties listed in the Ker & Downey portfolio are Kanana and Shinde, both in the Okavango Delta. Okuti has been awarded a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence, as well as 5 stars by the Botswana Tourist Board! Accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, and a laundry service. The camp is open all year round. Children aged 7 years and older are welcome.

The camp is accessed via 20 minutes’ road transfer from the local airstrip. It’s situated beside the Maunachira river, which rushes through the Xakanaxa Lagoon in the central region of the Moremi Game Reserve.

There are four double or twin rooms, a honeymoon room, and two rooms for family use. All guest accommodation is raised on wooden decking and positioned along the banks of the river. The design is quite unusual, with each unit comprising a semi-circular brown tunnel rather than a traditional tent shape. Each structure is termed a mosasa, which means ‘house of reeds’ in an ancient tribal language. On entering, you’ll spot the reeds, beautifully arranged upon the walls. All interiors are airy and spacious. Within every standard room, there’s a double bed or twin beds, a standing fan, a writing desk cum vanity table and chair, and a low stand for snacks and drinks delivered by friendly staff members. The en-suite washing facilities are separated from the bedroom by a low wall, and they consist of a flush toilet (in a cubicle), a washbasin, and a shower. There’s an outdoor shower too, and the camp supplies a few toiletries. Finally, double doors from the bedroom lead out onto a lovely private balcony, boasting lovely views over the river! The honeymoon mosasa benefits from a bathtub too, and the family mosasa is effectively two standard units with a shared bathroom. Access for disabled travellers is available on request.

The communal building at Okuti is also pretty unique. Approached from each mosasa via an elevated wooden walkway, it’s made up of five rondavels connected by a series of canvas arches. The pleasant lounge features plenty of comfortable seating around coffee tables, a few bookshelves, some intriguing artefacts, and spectacular vistas across the lagoon! In the dining area, chic tables-and-chairs are positioned in readiness for the camp’s delicious meals. It isn’t uncommon for staff and guides to sit with guests, making for a lively atmosphere. And guests are usually invited to help themselves from the well-stocked bar. Both lounge and dining areas flow out onto Okuti’s main deck, the location of the camp’s fire-pit and a great venue for drinks before and after dinner. On a slightly lower level, there’s a sparkling swimming pool, flanked by sunloungers. This is the perfect spot to cool off in between activities!

Okuti offers the following activities:

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - The Moremi Game Reserve is frequently described as the beating heart of the Okavango Delta. Surrounded by floodplains and characterised by grasslands, woodlands, and water sources, the reserve is famous for its big cats and impressive concentrations of plains game. All Big Five live here – lion, rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo! Smaller predators in residence include cheetah, spotted hyena, jackals, and wild dog, while the herbivore count features giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and an amazing assortment of antelopes. The area is a haven for birdlife too, with specials such as martial eagle, pygmy goose, fulvous whistling duck, and the mysterious Pel’s fishing owl. Drives from camp provide exciting opportunities to see this wealth of wildlife!
  • Motorboat rides

    - Also enjoyed in the presence of knowledgeable and experienced guides, boat rides are fantastic for getting to know the wildlife of the waterways. Focusing on Xakanaxa Lagoon, they showcase the likes of elephant, hippo, and all sorts of waterbirds. From September to December, guests have particularly good sightings of the lagoon’s storks and herons, as this is breeding season.
  • Children’s activities

    - It’s possible for kids to participate in the Young Explorers programme offered by Ker & Downey. This must be arranged before your stay. Youngsters can get involved in identifying tracks, firing bows-and-arrows, and much more besides!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
