The Moremi Game Reserve makes up the very heart of the Okavango Delta. Consisting primarily of the huge dry game-viewing area of Chief’s Island, Moremi is an area of breathtaking natural beauty and seriously good game viewing. Many of the Okavango’s large herds move here when the flood waters move in, making Moremi a great destination for the classic dry season. However, the north-west area specifically is one of the only parts of Africa that has excellent game viewing throughout the year.
Moremi’s excellent reputation is due in no small measure to its Mombo camps, regarded by many as the finest in Africa. Also, the region has a very high concentration of cats, particularly on Chief’s Island itself. As a result, Moremi is often referred to as the predator capital of Africa. The surrounding waters off Chief’s are also home to some of the most picturesque mokoro spots in the entire Delta.
WHAT YOU REALLY NEED TO KNOW
Many travellers build their entire trips around Moremi. However, we recommend care in choosing on which parts of Moremi to focus your trip. Remember, Moremi’s famous predator reputation is due to its north-west part – Chief’s Island, around Mombo. The remainder of Moremi may well be very beautiful, but it lacks great game.
In summary, Mombo is the only area that will guarantee you exceptional game viewing. If you’re basing your trip around other parts of Moremi, you should know that there are better game-viewing areas elsewhere.
Game driving, boating and makoro (in specific areas only) are all possible in Moremi. No night safaris or walking safaris are permitted.
TIME OF YEAR TO TRAVEL
Moremi is a classic dry-season reserve. June through to October is superb and it is throughout this season that the game viewing on offer will rival anywhere in the country. However, the specific area around Mombo is world-class at any time of year.
Chief's Camp is located approximately two hour's drive from Mombo. During high season we recommend spending the extra day and staying at Mombo, but during low season there is some seriously good value to be had at Chiefs. April to June, and also November, see very good-value rates at this camp.
