Kilindi Zanzibar is located on the north-west tip of Zanzibar Island, just outside the party beaches at Kendwa. With a number of backpacker and mass-market hotels nearby, Kilindi is by far the most luxurious property in the area.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
Kilindi is approximately one hour’s drive from the airport at Stone Town.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES:
Kilindi is a truly unique, stunning hotel. Designed by architect Neil Rocher, of Luangwa Safari House fame, the minimalistic style of Kilindi is very different to any other property on the island. The main areas are stylish and look out onto one of the largest pools on Zanzibar. With just 15 rooms spread across a plot of land the size of some of Zanzibar’s largest resorts, the one thing you guarantee by staying here is privacy.
The spacious suites are protected by huge Zanzibar doors and have vast bathrooms, lounge areas and outside decking platforms surrounding the suite’s private pool. These are the kind of rooms to lock yourselves away in, emerging only for activities and the excellent food, although you have butler service available.
One point we do have to emphasise about Kilindi is the quality of the beach directly outside the hotel – it is not nearly as good as elsewhere. However, the privacy of the suites, the main pool area, and the fact that neighbouring Kendwa Beach is regarded by many as the best beach on the whole island, more than makes up for any shortcomings. Taken over by the famous Elewana hotel group – famous for Migration Camp and Tarangire Treetops (among others), the teething problems we experienced at Kilindi are now things of the past – this hotel is a genuine contender for the island’s best property.
