With a private vehicle and guide as standard, this classic camp offers one of the highest-quality tented safaris in the Serengeti region! Due to close in December 2019, it’ll re-open immediately with a new name and a slightly different location.
*Please note, on 19th December 2019, Mwiba Tented Camp will close. A new camp, Mila Tented, will open in its place on 20th December 2019 in close proximity to the Mwiba site. For further information about the new camp, please contact a member of our team. We have no doubt that it’ll have the same top service and guiding as its predecessor.
Mwiba Tented Camp is a luxury property, owned and run by Legendary Expeditions. The camp shares the Mwiba Wildlife Reserve with its sister property, Mwiba Lodge. Together these properties occupy 240 km2 of private land, making them two of the most exclusive places to stay in the wider Serengeti region. Mwiba Tented Camp is renowned for the quality of its activities, as well as its superb service standards – this really is one of the best tented camps in this area! Accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, privately guided game drives and night drives, walking safaris, one 45-minute spa treatment per guest as welcome gift, Wi-Fi, telephone usage in moderation, transfers between the camp and Mwiba airstrip, and a laundry service. Guests staying for three nights or more enjoy a complimentary day trip to Ndutu or the Southern Serengeti! The camp is open all year round.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
The camp is accessed via 15 minutes’ road transfer from Mwiba airstrip. It’s situated to the south-west of the Serengeti National Park in its own private reserve, amidst ancient acacias. There are amazing views across a valley, overlooking a spring that is frequented by buffalo and elephants.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT MILA TENTED CAMP:
There are six tents, all sufficiently spacious to accommodate an extra bed. Each is spaced a good distance away from its neighbour, so there’s ample privacy. All tents are mounted on a stone platform. Part of the platform is pleasantly shaded by the canvas roof, providing a lovely veranda where you can sit and enjoy your views! Inside, you’ll find a double bed or twin beds (triple if required), in addition to bedside stands and lighting, and plenty of storage space. Amenities include mosquito nets and safe. The en-suite facilities are set out on one side of the tent, and they comprise flush toilet, twin washbasins, and shower.
Mwiba Tented Camp’s communal spaces are housed in a large mess tent, also positioned on a platform made out of stone. The lounge contains comfy sofas and armchairs around a chunky coffee table, with a standing fan nearby. In the dining area, there’s one big table where everyone eats together, flanked by classic safari chairs. A few wildlife pictures adorn the walls, and there’s an additional table for a selection of beverages! Just outside the tent, there’s a veranda where you can relax and marvel at the scenery. Head back down the steps, and you’ll arrive at the camp’s fire-pit – this is where guests gather to socialise and to swap their safari stories!
ACTIVITIES AT MILA TENTED CAMP:
The camp offers a great range of activities:
Expertly guided game drives- All parties have access to a private vehicle and guide, making for brilliant bespoke experiences of the Mwiba Wildlife Reserve. This area covers over 50,000 hectares of savanna, woodlands, and water sources. It’s home to all Big Five – lion, rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo! Other predators you can look out for include cheetah, hyenas, jackals, and wild dog, while the herbivore count features giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and all sorts of antelopes. There are hundreds of bird species too. Drives also take place in the South Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area!
Night drives- This activity is possible in the Mwiba Wildlife Reserve only. There are exciting opportunities to spot aardwolf, bush baby, civet, and a YZ favourite – the delightful pangolin!
Walking safaris- Also accompanied by a knowledgeable and experienced guide, walks are perfect for safarists interested in close scrutiny of the reserve’s smaller lives, such as its plants and insects. You can enjoy further birding too, sighting raptors, songbirds and waterbirds.
Fly camping- Positioned on the Rift Valley escarpment, Mwiba’s fly camp is made up of four tents. Please note, the experience requires advance booking and the minimum age requirement is 8 years. Guests are driven out to the location, or you can walk from the main camp… or you can even travel via helicopter! Once you’ve arrived, you’ll tuck in to dinner around the campfire. After that, you’ll bed down for the night, with a watchman on hand to keep you safe. You’ll return to main camp the following morning.
Cultural experiences- Travellers with a keen interest in culture will relish interactions with the local tribes – the Maasai, Hadzabe, Datoga, and Sukuma. These range from storytelling and dancing to foraging and making bows-and-arrows.
Children’s activities- Young safarists can get stuck into archery, fire-making, village visits, football, rock-climbing, spoor-casting, mask-making, and lots more besides!
*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
