When To Visit Kunene River:

We reckon Khowarib is something of a little gem, dazzling us with its understated elegance and authentic style. Highly recommended!

Khowarib Lodge has a great reputation for service – this eco-friendly property takes pride in the fact that the local Damaran people comprise a huge portion of their staff. The guides have years of experience – and it shows!

The spectacular Khowarib Gorge in Northwestern Namibia has the Hoanib River running through it – and it is here, tucked away on the riverbanks, that travellers can discover the beautiful retreat of Khowarib Lodge.

The communal areas of Khowarib Lodge are three in total, all situated below a large rock kopje and connected via a thatched roof. The lapa is made from local materials, creating a very authentic vibe. It houses a welcoming reception area, a well-stocked bar, and a comfortable lounge where you can relax for a few hours at a time. A small library adds to the laidback feel, offering you the chance to sit and read while you wait for dinner in the restaurant. Local artwork adorns the walls in all of the communal areas, providing a real sense of local tradition and culture! A curio shop offers some excellent mementos – and why not stop and take a moment to admire the stunning scenes from the viewing platform, which overlooks Khowarib Gorge? Down a small slope from the three main communal areas, there is a boma complete with a secluded pool, perfect for guests to take a dip and cool off in the heat of the afternoon sun!

Just past the swimming pool, the fourteen tented rooms of Khowarib Lodge nestle within the Mopane woodland along the riverbank. This is a really lovely location! Each room has been built on a wooden platform – this ensures some seclusion for guests and also functions as a private veranda from which to enjoy the awesome views of the Gorge and the riverbed below. Simple luxury awaits you in each room, with twin or double beds depending on your preference and an amazing open-air bathroom. There is nothing quite like taking a shower in the outdoors, with the riverbed below and nature all around you! The bathrooms are spacious and overall the accommodation is very well appointed, including tea- and coffee-making facilities and nicely shaded by the trees.

  • As Khowarib Lodge is in one of the remoter areas of Namibia, the activities on offer are incredibly special, none more so than the guided trips into the local Himba villages, where visitors can experience first hand local traditions, artwork and culture.
  • You can take an excursion out into the wild in search of desert-adapted elephant, or track rhino with a local and knowledgeable guide. In fact, Caesar Zandberg, one of the Lodge owners, is one of the most respected guides in Namibia!
  • Day trips to the incredible ancient rock engravings at Twyfelfontein are a must-do – and this is also a fantastic area for hikes and nature walks along the riverbed. Fans of feathery friends relish opportunities to go birding with local experts! The activities on offer may vary immensely, but all benefit from the expertise of the Lodge’s guides.
