"This lodge has one of the most beautiful views that Namibia has to offer – it's breathtaking!"

OVERVIEW:

Grootberg is ideal if you would like access to two of Namibia’s most spectacular areas. And we appreciate the local-ownership model, especially as the locals are so convivial! The staff at Grootberg Lodge are really very amiable, full of friendly advice about trips out either to Damaraland or to Etosha. The aim is that the lodge will eventually be run entirely by staff from the local community – it already has a large percentage of staff who are local, friendly, and keen to serve with a smile.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The property is located on a private reserve in north-west Namibia, a good middle distance between Damaraland and Etosha National Park, both offering exciting day trips, a wealth of wildlife, and stunning views.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT GROOTBERG LODGE:

The lodge has been lovingly built and kept – the use of red granite helps it to blend into its surroundings, while its position at the top of Grootberg Pass allows for amazing views of the canyons below, some of the best views in Namibia.

The communal areas greet you with an inspired walk through a long arched hallway with whitewashed walls. Sporadic adornments of traditional and local artwork usher you into a large breezy room, which instantly puts guests at ease. The lounge area includes a fireplace with comfortable seating around it and a small bar serving cool drinks to while away the hours with newfound friends! The dining area is also in this large communal room, with classically styled wooden chairs and tables for individual dining. A wide veranda appeals to those who wish to sit in the sun during the day and look out at the stunning views of the valley below, with stargazing a great option at night! After a snooze and a read on the veranda, why not take those inviting steps down to the infinity pool, which also has superb sightlines of the canyons below. Wherever you are at Grootberg Lodge, you are guaranteed to enjoy one of the best views ever!

Local rock and stone have been used to build the innovative en-suite chalets, numbering sixteen, at Grootberg Lodge. Each has dry-stone walls and a thatched roof, with a simple and unassuming interior, traditional paintings and wooden carvings decorating each corner. A down-to-earth bathroom provides a shower, toilet and washbasin, as well as a large window for you to see out into the wild as you shower! There is a writing desk for you to sit and pen your safari diaries or send correspondence back home! A tea-and-coffee station keeps you fully charged and a cool breeze relaxes you when it is time to unwind. Leading onto a small private deck, sliding doors open into another secluded place for you to witness awe-inspiring vistas of the Klip River Valley and the black eagles that are a regular sighting for guests at the camp. This is the perfect place to watch the sunset or gaze at the stars at night. Two of the sixteen chalets are family sized, with a large shared entrance and living space and a shared bathroom in the centre of the chalet.

ACTIVITIES AT GROOTBERG LODGE:

Activities you can order from the lodge include a visit to a local Himba village, tracking black rhino on foot in the valley, or drives down the river.

  • The favourite thing to do for many visitors is a trip to track desert-adapted elephant. The majestic beauties can be found with a local guide and the experience provides memories to last a lifetime!
  • Hiking trails offer a chance to see a selection of big game. The majority of visitors tend to be on self-drive trips to Damaraland or Etosha National Park – and this location is ideal. Staff are knowledgeable and extremely helpful when it comes to advice on the area.
  • And if you are looking for some luxury and relaxation through a bit of pampering, you are in the right place at Grootberg Lodge! There is a simple massage room near the pool, where guests can forget about their worries.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course
