"An exclusive, eco-friendly tented camp with a low environmental impact. This semi-permanent camp offers a mobile and experiential essence, while providing a great base from which to go in search of the desert-dwelling wildlife of Damaraland."

OVERVIEW:

//Huab Under Canvas is owned and operated by Ultimate Safaris, a company renowned for its pioneering safaris in Namibia! The property is listed in Ultimate’s Journeys Under Canvas portfolio. It’s booked on an exclusive basis, for a maximum of 16 travellers. The accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of drinks, toiletries, towels, and a laundry service. We recommend a stay of at least two nights, and preferably three. The camp is open seasonally, between April and November.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp is accessed via private fly-in provided by Ultimate Safaris, either from the Etosha area in the north or from Khorixas in the south. It has a lovely location, amidst mopane trees on the banks of a tributary of the River //Huab.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT HUAB UNDER CANVAS:

Guest accommodation consists of eight Meru-style tents, each sleeping a maximum of two persons. Family units can be created by combining two tents. Each standard tent contains twin beds, a bedside table, overhead lighting, and storage furniture. There are two gauze windows with curtains. The beds are nicely made up with sheets and blankets, with additional blankets and hot water bottles available for chilly nights! A canvas opening at the back of every tent provides access to the en-suite washing area, which has a flush toilet, a jug and basin set out on a wooden vanity unit, and a walk-in hot bucket shower. Towels and toiletries are supplied free of charge. To one side of the tent is a patio area with a couple of chairs – it’s a great place for relaxation.

//Huab Under Canvas’s communal spaces are found in a spacious mess tent a short distance from the guest accommodation. There’s a comfortable lounge, featuring well-cushioned wood-framed chairs around a coffee table, as well as some interesting wall artwork and a telescope! Guests gather for meals in the camp’s pleasant dining area, enjoying hot breakfasts, fresh lunches, and three-course dinners. And the fire-pit, with its deckchairs, parasols, and central stove, is the setting for snacks, drinks, and general socialising, with everyone keen to share their safari tales!

ACTIVITIES AT HUAB UNDER CANVAS:

The camp offers an exciting assortment of activities.

  • Ultimate Safaris employs two Rhino Rangers for the purpose of safeguarding the local rhino population and assisting with tracking the huge herbivores!
  • As you explore the //Huab Conservancy, you can expect to see a great range of other desert-adapted species, such as leopard, spotted and brown hyenas, African wild cat, Cape fox, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, oryx, springbok, and steenbok. Trips to the Upper //Huab river are a must for travellers interested in seeing plenty of desert-adapted elephant!
  • Other nature walks and drives are also on offer, all in the presence of knowledgeable and experienced guides.
  • You can head to Twyfelfontein too, to admire the famous rock art. And visits to a remote Himba village are possible, providing fascinating insights into how the local people go about their daily lives.

Additionally, guests can take part in a thrilling multi-day walking safari, known as //Huab Trails. Walks last from 8 to 12 hours. Usually the experience occurs over three days, with the first and third nights spent at //Huab Under Canvas and the second at Ultimate Safaris’ sleep-out camp. Known as Stellar Escape, this camp is situated on a dry riverbed within the //Huab Conservancy. The accommodation is very comfy, featuring camp beds, bedside tables, basic lighting, and a wardrobe. Guests arrive in time for sundowners, followed by a lavish bush dinner! Afterwards, your guide gives you some information about the night skies and you can enjoy spotting satellites, shooting stars, and even meteors. Come morning, hot beverages are provided while you watch the sunrise before returning to main camp for a big breakfast!

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

**Walking with rhino in Namibia is one of Africa's finest walking experiences. However, our clients should also know that the guides here carry no firearms, something you need to be aware of when booking this activity.
