East Africa Safaris

Famous for endless open savanna, East Africa boasts unrivalled concentrations of game. This is iconic Africa – sprawling plains dotted with acacias and teeming with wildlife!

It’s home to heavy-hitting safari areas such as the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara – the famous Great Migration moves between these two parks –, as well as the game-rich floor of the volcanic crater of Ngorongoro. Mount Kilimanjaro looms majestically on the horizon, while the presence of Earth’s last remaining population of mountain gorilla combines with the traditional Big Five and numerous other highlights to make this an exceptional wildlife region.

"Unsurprisingly, East Africa is our most popular safari destination. So, game viewing is truly epic here, but the region is also very well known for its beaches – the Zanzibar Archipelago in particular. We design a lot of bush-and-beach trips to East Africa!"

The name ‘Yellow Zebra’ has its roots in the Serengeti, and our team includes professional guides who have worked in the park itself. In short, it’s an area we know incredibly well.

East Africa is the continent’s most famous wildlife destination

Home to the likes of Tanzania’s Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater as well as Kenya’s Maasai Mara and Amboseli, the region boasts a number of game-rich areas with frankly phenomenal concentrations of the Big Five.

As you’ll have gathered from the descriptions of the trips above, 99 per cent of our safaris to the region include at least two of these safari heavyweights! However, it’s important to remember that there are a number of other contenders. They may be lesser known or simply farther off the more popular highlight areas, but they’re well worth considering for your trip. Southern Tanzania’s Nyerere (formerly Selous) and Ruaha are often an attractive option for clients looking to view the quieter Tanzanian parks, while Western Tanzania’s Katavi is truly remote and difficult to access, but stacked with big game.

Top experiences to also include in your East Africa safari

Beaches

Whether or not you’re thinking of spending any time on the beach, you might like to keep in mind that East Africa is the continent’s best safari-and-beach destination.

Tanzania’s Zanzibar Archipelago is the most popular option, but both Tanzania and Kenya have a breathtakingly beautiful coastline.

Mountains and volcanoes

Home to Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya as well as a number of lesser-known off-the-beaten-track peaks, East Africa is a dream destination for adventurers and hikers.

This is a specialist experience, not often included on pan-East Africa safaris due to the time involved to climb.

Gorillas and chimps

Eyeballing a great ape on foot is one of the most exhilarating wildlife experiences on Earth, while spending time in a chimpanzee group easily rivals anything we sell.

East Africa is home to the world’s last population of mountain gorillas, and places like Mahale in Tanzania offer exceptional interactions with wild chimpanzees.

Cultural safaris

This type of safari is possible across Safari Africa, as a number of amazing tribes are spread over the vast majority of countries in which we operate trips.

East Africa, however, home to the Maasai, the Samburu, and the Hadzabe, deserves its own special mention. Well-balanced authentic cultural safaris can be a challenge to get right, but they’re something we enjoy taking on.

We hope you’ve found something to inspire you on this page. Please give us a call to discuss your East Africa safari!
