Zambia Couples Safari Holidays

Renowned for its sheer wilderness, Zambia is also home to Victoria Falls, the largest waterfall in the world!

Five properties within this beautiful country really stand out for their enticing accommodation. Two apiece are in the South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi national parks, while the remaining one is in the Vic Falls region. The national parks properties provide superb safari activities, while Vic Falls is famous for its mix of daredevil activities, lovely river cruises, and animal encounters!

Starting in the South Luangwa National Park, we encounter Tena Tena Camp, a YZ all-time fave. This property has a gorgeous location, along the banks of the Luangwa River and within the remote Nsefu region of the park. Open from late May to the end of October, it is run by Robin Pope, a name synonymous with classic safaris! There are just five guest tents, all occupying a very private position on the river bank. Each has a big comfy bed and lovely river views from your own veranda – you might find it difficult to leave your room!

Another top property in the South Luangwa is Tafika Camp. Run by Remote Africa Safaris, this little camp is perfect for couples who like their safari on the highly adventurous side! Activities include classic game drives and game walks, but you can also enjoy cycling and microlighting. And for all the wildness of the camp, with its rustic reed-and-thatch design, there is no compromise on comfort – in all six chalets, generous-sized beds and well-appointed en-suite facilities come as standard, including flush toilet and hot water on tap!

Next, we head to the Lower Zambezi National Park, and specifically to Chongwe River Camp. In fact, this property is just outside the park border! This does mean that there is less wildlife close to camp. However, the location of Chongwe, at the meeting of the Chongwe and Zambezi rivers, most definitely has the wow factor – and the accommodation is of a very high standard. There are just nine Meru-style tents and two suites, all spaced along the river bank and shaded by winterthorn trees. The interiors are airy, and neutrally decorated so the beauty of the natural surroundings shines through. Couples looking for something really special can book the Cassia suite, which comes with your own bar, lounge, and even a private pool!

We also love the Lower Zambezi’s Chiawa Camp, the most luxurious lodge in the park! Right on the banks of the mighty Zambezi, this camp is great for checking out hippos and some brilliant birdlife. Open during the dry season, Chiawa contains nine Meru-style tents and we recommend booking a tent on the river banks to ensure you get the best views! All accommodation is ultra-stylish and sumptuous, with the majority of options featuring a four-poster bed, a comfy lounge area, and a roll-top bath.

Finally we must mention a property in Victoria Falls, for couples intent on seeing this natural wonder of the world! Our top property here is The Royal Livingstone. This selection represents quite a departure from the other camps and lodges we recommend in Zambia, as The Royal Livingstone is a huge hotel with no fewer than 175 bedrooms! However, the location of the property is so fabulous, and its rooms of such high quality, that we have to include it here. The Royal Livingstone is down beside the Zambezi riverside, boasting a splendid sundeck from which guests can see the spray of the Falls! The rooms are situated within 17 colonial-style buildings along the river’s edge, and all ooze understated elegance. The Falls are just a 15-minute stroll away, through the hotel’s delightful gardens, and Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is also very easily reached. Wet-and-wild watersports… serene river cruises… adventures with animals… the Falls has loads to recommend it as a holiday destination!
