When To Visit Okavango Delta:
"Fairly recently refurbished, Nxabega has never looked better. This is a stunning property and one that offers a good all-round Okavango experience. Book this property with its more expensive sister camp Sandibe, and there is a good argument to say that that’s the very best of Botswana for a relatively sensible price!"

OVERVIEW:

Nxabega Okavango Tented Camp is owned and operated by &Beyond, a name synonymous with high standards of accommodation and service. A classic water camp, Nxabega is ideal for travellers more inclined to prioritise the serenity and sheer beauty of the Delta than a Big Five game-viewing experience. The camp has been awarded a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence! Accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, all activities apart from helicopter flights, and a laundry service. The camp is open all year round. Children of all ages are welcome.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp is accessed via 15 minutes’ road transfer from the local airstrip. It has a lovely location within a private concession in the South-Central Delta, overlooking lagoons, channels, and floodplains.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT NXABEGA OKAVANGO TENTED CAMP:

Guest accommodation consists of just nine tents, including one family unit. All are positioned in the shade of ebony and leadwood trees, on the banks of a shallow channel that runs off the Delta’s Boro river. A few wooden steps lead up to a door, which opens into the bedroom. In each standard tent, you’ll find a double bed or twin beds, bedside tables and lighting, a writing desk cum dressing table and chair, and a pleasant seating area. The palette is mostly neutrals and greys, with a few interesting patterns. The en-suite facilities are found behind a canvas wall and large wardrobe. The latter offers ample storage space and a few useful items such as mosquito repellent and an emergency foghorn. The washroom contains a separate flush toilet, twin washbasins, and walk-in shower – and there’s an outdoor shower too! Additional amenities include a standing fan, a safe, and a mini-bar. Returning to the bedroom, the walls can be rolled up entirely to access one section of the deck, which is set with a small table and a couple of safari chairs. Another section has a swing-seat, sheltered under within a sala to provide a lovely spot for relaxing and enjoying your views. The family tent is made up of two standard tents, linked by a closed canvas corridor.

The communal structures at Nxabega are positioned at approximately the centre of the site, and they too have views over the Boro channel. The lounge contains comfortable couches and armchairs around a glass-topped coffee table strewn with artefacts and some reading material. A sophisticated slate-tone rug adorns the floor, while overhead there’s elegant lighting. In the dining room, chic tables in rows of three are flanked by padded upright chairs, providing a comfortable venue for fine dining! Adjacent to this space is the camp’s interactive food and coffee bar, where guests enjoy a range of snacks prepared by talented baristas. Al fresco dining is also offered, in the open-air boma just behind the main lodge. The safari shop sells some wonderful curios, perfect for souvenir seekers. &Beyond’s well-equipped gym-in-a-bag is available for keep-fit fans, and the spa offers blissful massages – in-room spa services can also be arranged for you. The communal decks are fantastic for relaxing and marvelling at the scenery, and right at the front of the main areas there’s the camp’s swimming pool. Surrounded by cushioned sunloungers, it’s ideal for cooling off in between activities.

ACTIVITIES AT NXABEGA OKAVANGO TENTED CAMP:

Nxabega offers an exciting assortment of activities! In the list below, activities dependent on water levels are marked with an asterisk. Please also note the following minimum age requirements – 6 years for drives, 12 for boat rides, and 16 for walks and mokoro excursions.

  • Expertly guided game drives

The camp’s private concession covers about 25,000 hectares of wetlands and woodlands and other habitats, supporting a great variety of wildlife. Drives are available during the morning and the afternoon into evening. Among the species you can look out for are predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah, and wild dog. There are plenty of herbivores too, not least giraffe, zebra, and antelopes on the plains, and hippo wallowing in the waters! Come nightfall, you might spot serval, caracal, and even the charming pangolin. And there’s ample birdlife.
  •  Bush walks

This activity is highly recommended for anyone interested in close scrutiny of the smaller lives of the Delta, for example its plants, insects, and bird species. You’ll be accompanied by a very knowledgeable guide, happy to answer all your questions.
  •  Boat cruises*

You can have a lot of fun exploring the concession’s waterways on a boat cruise! There’s so much to see, from hippo to Nile crocodile to abundant waterbirds.
  •  Mokoro excursions*

You can also view the wildlife of the waters from aboard a mokoro, a dug-out canoe. As this type of transport doesn’t have a motor, you’ll be able to dedicate your full attention to the sounds of the mammals, reptiles, and birds all around you.
  •  Fishing*

If you visit during the months from March to December, you can have a go at catching the likes of bream, catfish, and the mighty tigerfish too!
  •  Helicopter flights

These flights are designed to showcase the permanent delta, the regions that are inaccessible via land or water vehicle. Various flight times are offered and you can even ride with the doors removed, for fabulous photo opportunities!
  •  WILDChild programme

Nxabega offers activities especially for children, including fishing expeditions and using the Delta’s famous white waterlilies to make jewellery. For more details, please contact a member of the YZ team.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
