ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT VUMBURA PLAINS CAMP:
Vumbura Plains is made up of two camps – North Camp and South Camp. Both contain seven guest tents, all elevated above the ground on wooden decking and linked along wooden walkways. These tents, which have thatched roofs, are among the most spacious we’ve visited in Safari Africa! Each has two levels. On the upper level, there’s an enormous double bed or twin beds surrounded by mosquito netting, as well as a shelf unit that includes a place for lighting and plenty of storage space. The en-suite washroom is also on this level, and it offers flush toilet, twin washbasins, and open-plan shower. A few steps lead down to the lounge area, which has comfortable seating and a couple of stands for books and drinks. Other in-room amenities include an overhead fan, plug points, a tea-and-coffee station, a mini-bar, a safe, a hairdryer, dressing gowns, and a selection of free toiletries. From the bedroom area, doors lead out onto a veranda, which boasts an outdoor shower, a plunge pool, sunloungers, a covered sala for private dining, and of course spectacular views!
The communal buildings at Vumbura Plains are accessed from the guest tents along the same wooden walkways. Both camps have an open-sided lounge area, featuring colourfully cushioned seating arranged in L-shaped units and a few coffee tables standing by. These spaces adjoin the well-stocked bar, where you can help yourself from the range of alcoholic and soft drinks. There’s even a coffee machine! On the other side of the bar, there’s the dining area, where chic wooden tables-and-chairs are set up in readiness for light breakfasts, tasty brunches, revitalising afternoon teas, and lavish three-course suppers. All interiors flow out onto a wide veranda, where you can marvel at amazing vistas! Steps from the veranda descend towards a fire-pit, surrounded by more comfy seating and offering a great spot for socialising and swapping safari stories. Friendly members of staff are on hand throughout your stay to make sure you feel at home, and for the ultimate in relaxation you can request a massage in your private sala.
ACTIVITIES AT VUMBURA PLAINS CAMP:
Vumbura Plains provides an enticing assortment of land- and water-based activities. Please note, some of these depend on weather conditions and/or guide availability, as shown by an asterisk below:
Expertly guided game drives- These take place during the morning and the afternoon. Drives cover a lot of ground, traversing the plains of the 60,000-hectares Vumbura Concession to provide some high-quality wildlife viewing. Highlights include four of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo! You can also look out for smaller predators and herbivores, such as cheetah, spotted hyena, wild dog, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and antelopes.
Night safari drives- Head out on vehicle safari after sunset for sightings of the concession’s nocturnal species, among them leopard, porcupine, and the charming pangolin.
Boating*- Explore the waterways of the concession on a thrilling boat trip! There’s a lot to see, not least hippo, Nile crocodile, and plenty of waterbirds.
Mokoro excursions*- You can also view the wildlife of the waters aboard a mokoro, a dug-out canoe. As the mokoro doesn’t have a motor, you’ll enjoy listening to the mammals, reptiles, and birds all around you.
Guided safari walks*- Set out on foot in the company of a knowledgeable and experienced guide, to observe the concession’s plants, insects, and birdlife. Sometimes it’s possible to track big game too!
Catch-and-release fishing*- Basic equipment is available from camp for guest use. You could spend an entire afternoon fishing the area’s waterways, catching-and-releasing the likes of pike and bream.
Hot air ballooning over the Okavango Delta- This activity is available at extra cost. You can take to the skies, to marvel at breathtaking vistas across the Delta!
Helicopter trips over the Okavango Delta- Also incurring an additional charge, helicopter flights are another wonderful way of experiencing the Delta from on high.
Photo hub*- Go on safari with an Olympus photographer, who will ensure you’ll leave camp with some amazing photos!
