“Little Machaba is sister camp to Machaba Camp and located in the same game-packed area of Khwai. This camp is perfect if you are a small group looking for exclusive use, as it has only four rooms of which two are family rooms.”

OVERVIEW:

Little Machaba offers a fabulous base camp from which to explore the Khwai region of the Okavango Delta! Usually, there’s a minimum age requirement of 12 years, but when the camp is booked exclusively all ages are welcome.

Little Machaba is owned and run by Machaba Safaris. Presently this company’s portfolio is made up of eight properties, including highly rated sister camp Machaba. As Little Machaba has just four guest tents and can be booked on an exclusive basis, it’s an excellent option for a small group of friends and/or family members. The price of your stay includes accommodation, all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, all activities, transfers between the camp and Khwai Airstrip, and a laundry service. The camp is open all year round.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The camp is accessed via 30 minutes’ road transfer from Khwai Airstrip. It’s situated on the same scenic island as Machaba Camp, amidst tall trees and overlooking a large flood plain.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT LITTLE MACHABA:

There are just four guest tents, including two for family use. All tents are Meru style – an exterior layer of canvas extends over the inner structure to form a shady veranda at the front. This veranda is sufficiently spacious to accommodate a couple of chairs and a table for private dining, the camp masseuse’s massage table can be set up here (visits on request), and even an outside bathtub! It’s also a great spot for simply relaxing and enjoying your views of the bush. Entering the tent, you’ll find a double bed or twin beds, bedside stands and lighting, a writing desk and comfy chair, another easy chair, and storage space. Amenities include a standing fan and a tea-and-coffee station. The en-suite facilities are found at the back of the tent, and they comprise flush toilet, twin washbasins, and shower. The two family tents are joined via a shared lounge area, with the option to roll down canvas walls to provide a little privacy if required. And access for disabled travelers can be put in place – for further details, please contact a member of our team.

Many of the communal areas at Little Machaba are housed in the camp’s mess tent, which is accessed from the guest tents along raised wooden walkways through the trees. Inside, there’s a very comfortable lounge, containing a medley of sofas, armchairs, and poufs, set up around surprisingly ornate coffee and occasional tables. Colorful rugs adorn the floor and elegant lanterns dangle from the ceiling. There’s also a library, where guests can enjoy a little quiet time. The dining area is similarly styled, and it features one large table where everyone eats together. There’s also a well-stocked bar! A short distance from the mess tent, a fire-pit provides an al fresco location for dining, and private romantic dinners can be arranged too. An on-site therapist offers a range of relaxing massages on request, while the camp’s swimming pool, complete with sunloungers alongside, is also ideal for winding down in between activities here.

ACTIVITIES AT LITTLE MACHABA:

Little Machaba’s activity list is made up of both land- and water-based activities. However, please note that the availability of mokoro excursions depends on water levels during your stay. Also, walking safaris are possible only when an expert guide is in camp.

  • Expertly guided game drives

    – The Khwai Community Concession covers approximately 200,000 hectares of plains, woodlands, and waterways, and it’s home to a real wealth of wildlife. Highlights include four of the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo! There are plenty of smaller predators and herbivores in residence too, such as cheetah, hyena, jackals, wild dog, giraffe, zebra, and all sorts of antelopes. The drives take place during early morning and late afternoon, focusing on the floodplains and river systems around camp.
  • Night drives

    – This activity is highly recommended for safarists interested in the night life of the concession. Head out after sunset, in the company of your guide, and you can look out for leopard, aardwolf, honey badger, and the prickly porcupine!
  • Walking safaris

    – Also enjoyed in the presence of a knowledgeable and experienced guide, walks provide opportunities to take a really close look at the smaller aspects of the concession – for example, the plants, insects, and birdlife. This activity is dependent on the availability of a walking guide.
  • Mokoro excursions

    – Travel aboard a mokoro, otherwise known as a dug-out canoe, is fantastic for getting up close to the wildlife of Khwai’s waterways, which includes elephant, hippo, and beautiful waterbirds. The mokoro has no motor, so you can drift quietly through the water – a memorable experience. This activity is dependent on the water levels.
  • Local community visits

    – If you like a cultural add-on to your safari, you’ll appreciate trips to the local community, to find out about the local people’s ways of life. For more information about this activity, or anything else to do with staying at Little Machaba, please get in touch with a member of the YZ team

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
