"Nomad Tanzania do it again! Entamanu is a contender for best property at Ngorongoro. I absolutely love the location of this camp. "

OVERVIEW:

The company Nomad Tanzania is one of the finest safari operators in the country, effortlessly finding the balance between classic safari adventure and luxury – and this offering on Ngorongoro’s crater rim is no exception! With views out over the astonishing caldera that makes the region so famous, and access to quiet Maasai villages, this is a first-rate option. While most of the lodges and hotels on the rim are much larger, Entamanu retains the charm and intimacy of a wilderness safari camp, with just seven rooms. It’s also a ‘closed access’ property – only Nomad vehicles are allowed here, with no other companies driving through, which adds to the warmth and intimacy of the camp. Combine this with the supreme guiding levels, and the great food and service that come with a Nomad property, and this camp provides a wonderful, authentic Ngorongoro Crater experience, which can be hard to come by as the crater gets quite busy!

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Set on the western rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, the camp is usually accessed via a one-and-a-half-hour road transfer from Lake Manyara Airstrip. The crater is often part of a flying or driving circuit of northern Tanzania. Entamanu has spectacular views, not only down over the crater floor, but also north-west as far as the Serengeti, Olduvai Gorge, and even the Gol Mountains. It’s a breathtaking spot! There is excellent resident year-round game on the crater floor, including rare rhino and massive bull elephants.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT ENTAMANU NGORONGORO:

Entamanu’s guest accommodation consists of seven tents, set up on either side of the mess tent. Two of these are family units with two bedrooms apiece, while each standard tent has one bedroom with either a double bed or twin beds. All impeccably styled, the tents have a comfy seating area with lovely views, a writing desk and chair, and well-appointed en-suite facilities comprising separate flush toilet, twin washbasins with mirrors, and walk-in shower. Additional amenities include a walkie-talkie, insect repellent, charging points, and even an air horn! The crater rim is notorious for being a bit chilly due to the altitude, but every tent has remote-controlled gas heaters to keep you cozy, as well as soft furnishings such as woven throws and wool rugs, which help you feel very snug indeed!

The communal facilities of the camp are fairly modest, consisting of a lounge and dining area within a central mess tent. The camp has a super-low footprint and Nomad is renowned for its excellent conservation ethos. No concrete was used in the construction – and in fact Nomad instructed its workforce to shift the mess platform a few feet, to avoid a small bush! The intention was to minimize disruption to the landscape, an aim that is heartily applauded at YZ.

ACTIVITIES AT ENTAMANU NGORONGORO:

The main activity here is game driving on the crater floor, but the cultural experiences (particularly with their location away from the busier areas) are a real highlight!

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - The crater is home to all Big Five species – lion, black rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo. Other sightings can include spotted hyena, hippo, zebra, eland, wildebeest, and very occasionally leopard. There’s plenty of bird life too – raptors, waterbirds, songbirds, and rollers, to name a few.
  • Guided nature walks

    - Guests can take part in walks along the crater rim and hikes in the forests, all in the company of a ranger and a member of the Maasai. More adventurous safarists can go slightly farther afield and visit the Olmoti and Empakai craters. This might require extra time at camp if included, so please discuss logistics with one of our consultants, who will be happy to advise you.
  • Cultural experiences

    - You can also visit a Maasai village and meet the locals! A real must-do here is seeing the villages and meeting the people of Ngorongoro. From Entamanu, the trip is very accessible – it’s quiet too, and always a rewarding activity.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
