"Nomad Tanzania do it again! Entamanu is a contender for best property at Ngorongoro. I absolutely love the location of this camp. "

OVERVIEW:

Nomad Tanzania is one of the finest safari operators in the country, effortlessly finding the balance between classic safari adventure and luxury – and their offering on Ngorongoro’s crater rim is no exception! Completely re-imagined in 2024, Entamanu is now a more permanent lodge with stylish new cottage rooms, and the property has also been split into a main camp (seven rooms) and private camp (four rooms), perfect for families or groups who would like that extra bit of privacy when booking the property for exclusive use. With views over the astonishing caldera that makes the region so famous, and access to quiet Maasai villages that give you a much more authentic cultural experience, this is a first-rate crater option. While most of the lodges and hotels on the rim are much larger, Entamanu retains the charm and intimacy of a wilderness safari camp in a more secluded location. The food, service, and guiding levels are of the highest quality – and you also get a private vehicle as standard. This wonderfully upgraded Entamanu really does provide a rare, unspoiled Ngorongoro Crater experience! That can be hard to come by, as the crater floor can get quite busy playing host to the Big Five in a relatively small game area.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Set on the northwestern rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, Entamanu has a unique location that gets you away from the crowds and is beautifully off the beaten track. To get to the crater floor, it’s about 30 minutes drive along the rim to the Seneto descent road. The lodge has spectacular views, not only down over the crater floor, but also north-west as far as the Serengeti, Olduvai Gorge, and even the Gol Mountains – it’s a breathtaking spot! There’s excellent resident year-round wildlife on the crater floor, including rare rhino, lion, brilliant birdlife, and massive bull elephants. Please note that due to the altitude it can get chilly at night at the crater, so at least one warm jumper is recommended, although with Entamanu’s new cottages with indoor heating, coziness comes as standard!

Entamanu Ngorongoro is usually accessed via a 2-hour road transfer from Lake Manyara Airstrip. The crater is often part of a flying or driving circuit of northern Tanzania, including the Serengeti and Lake Manyara. Please chat with one of our specialists about how best to incorporate this great property into your itinerary.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT ENTAMANU NGORONGORO:

The main areas of Entamanu have received an amazing upgrade. The new lounge and dining area is now an expertly designed permanent wooden structure, raised on small stilts so as to minimize disruption to the landscape. The interiors are elegantly furnished in neutral, earthy colors, with local furnishings and handmade artifacts. The atmosphere is that of a comfortable retreat, complete with open fire, snugs in which to curl up with a good book, and welcoming armchairs. The food at Entamanu is wonderful and the dining is communal, although private dining is available on request.

The guest accommodation is split into two separate camps. In the main camp there are seven cottage rooms, again raised on platforms, and all have magnificent views over the crater. All impeccably styled, the suites have a comfy seating area with lovely views, a writing desk and chair, well-appointed en-suite facilities comprising flush toilet, twin washbasins with mirrors, and indoor shower. Additional amenities include a walkie-talkie, insect repellent, and charging points. The crater rim is notorious for being a bit chilly due to the altitude, but every room has remote-controlled gas heaters to keep you warm, as well as soft furnishings such as woven throws and wool rugs, which help to make you feel very snug indeed! Two of the seven rooms can be used as family units with two full-sized rooms and an interconnecting, shared bathroom.

The private camp consists of just four rooms (two of which can be family units), and is set away from the main lodge and fully self-contained with its own staff and lounge and dining area – it offers amazing exclusivity for small groups or multi-generational families. The rooms are slightly different in that they’re made of stretched canvas, wood, and glass, but the interiors are the same as the main lodge’s cottages – classy, comfortable, and elegant. The location of Entamanu is truly wild and stunning, and can be a little windy at times, so be ready for an elemental crater experience!

ACTIVITIES AT ENTAMANU NGORONGORO:

The main activity here is game driving on the crater floor, but the cultural experiences (particularly with their location away from the busier areas) are a real highlight!

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - The crater is home to all Big Five species – lion, black rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo. Other sightings can include spotted hyena, hippo, zebra, eland, wildebeest, and very occasionally leopard. There’s plenty of birdlife too – raptors, waterbirds, songbirds, and rollers, to name a few.
  • Guided nature walks

    - Guests can take part in walks along the crater rim and hikes in the forests, all in the company of a ranger and a member of the Maasai. The more adventurous can go slightly farther afield and visit the Olmoti and Empakai craters. This might require extra time at camp, but the landscapes are some of the most spectacular in the world. Please note, there’s a minimum age requirement of 12 years for this activity.
  • Cultural experiences

    - You can also visit a Maasai village and meet the locals! A real must-do here is visiting the villages and meeting the people of Ngorongoro. Due to Entamanu’s superb remote location, the trip is very accessible – and because you’re away from the crowds it’s a much more authentic, and always rewarding experience.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
