OVERVIEW:
This is a very, outdoorsy camp which is perfect for anyone looking to experience some of the Maasai culture and explore by foot. It can be used as just a stop off when traveling between the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti or as a base for anyone looking to experience a different side to Northern Tanzania.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
Olduvai Tented Camp sits just south of the Serengeti border in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It is the only camp in Olduvai Gorge and is just a 40-minute drive from the Ngorongoro Crater. The game is particularly good here from January to March when the Great Migration passes through.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT OLDUVAI CAMP:
The camp is built around a large kopje (rocky outcrop). Like its sister lodge, Mawe Ninga, it is run in partnership with the local Maasai. The seventeen tents encircle the kopje and have decks overlooking the surrounding plains. They are made of canvas with thatch roofs, concrete floors, and bathrooms with flush toilets, a basin, and shower. Two thatched rondavels are home to the lounge and restaurant and there is a large open fire pit outside where guests can gather to talk to each other and learn about the local culture from the Maasai guides.
ACTIVITIES AT OLDUVAI CAMP:
- Activities include walking safaris across the plains of the southern Serengeti, game drives, and a trip to Olduvai museum.
*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
