Tanda Tula Safari Camp is owned and run by Don and Nina Scott, with help from their terrific team. It's sister property to Tanda Tula Field Camp. The Tanda Tula team pride themselves on their warm and welcoming approach. Accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, vehicle and walking safaris, and a laundry service. Safari Camp is open all year round and children aged 8 years and older are welcome.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
The camp’s closest airport is East Gate at Hoedspruit, which is 45 minutes’ drive away. Flights are available from Johannesburg and Cape Town. Tanda Tula is situated on the banks of the Nhlaralumi riverbed, in the shade of trees.
ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIESAT TANDA TULA SAFARI CAMP:
There are 12 guest tents, each raised on wooden decking and with a sturdy thatch roof. A few wooden steps lead up onto the deck, which is set with a couple of sunloungers and a table – it’s the perfect place for relaxing and enjoying your views over the riverbed! Inside the tent, there’s a double bed or twin beds, bedside tables and lighting, a writing desk or vanity table with chair and mirror over, a hat stand, a few pouffes, and wildlife wall artwork. Additional amenities include a standing fan and a mini-bar. Positioned at the back of the tent, the en-suite washroom contains flush toilet, twin washbasins with mirrors over, and Victoria bathtub. There’s also an outdoor shower! Larger tents are available for family use, accommodating up to two adults and two children.
The communal buildings at Tanda Tula Safari Camp are also made out of timber and thatch. The most spacious structure houses the property’s lounge, dining area, and bar, flowing out on to a viewing deck. We love the comfortable lounge, which features well-cushioned sofas and armchairs around coffee tables, bookshelves full of reading material, lots of intriguing artefacts, more wildlife wall artwork, some plants, and two cosy fireplaces. The camp’s bar is conveniently placed between the lounge and dining spaces, and it offers a great range of wines, beers, spirits, soft drinks, and more. The dining area is a very pleasant setting for tucking in to delicious meals, and guests can also enjoy al fresco eating and drinking on the deck and in the traditional boma. Another structure contains the shop, which stocks arts-and-crafts items as well as clothing. And just a short distance away, you’ll find the highly inviting swimming pool! This is flanked by sunloungers with parasols, and a few tall trees for additional shade.
ACTIVITIES AT TANDA TULA SAFARI CAMP:
Tanda Tula specialises in classic safari activities – expertly guided vehicle and walking safaris. The Timbavati is situated to the west of the Kruger National Park. As the border between the regions is entirely unfenced, impressive amounts of wildlife populate both the enormous park and the more modestly proportioned reserve. Geographical features of the Timbavati include savanna, woodland, and seasonal rivers.
- Game drives take place during early morning and late afternoon into evening, with each vehicle accommodating a maximum of six guests. You can look out for all Big Five – lion, rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo. There are numerous smaller predators and herbivores in residence too, such as cheetah, hyenas, jackals, wild dog, hippo, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and antelopes! Over 350 types of bird also live here, among them Montagu’s harrier, woolly-necked stork, harlequin quail, and southern carmine bee-eater.
- The camp’s guided walks are available after breakfast, and they’re fantastic for anyone interested in close observation of the Timbavati’s birds, insects, and plant life. Please note, for this activity, there’s a minimum age requirement of 16 years.
- However, everyone can enjoy a little bush dining – and some riverbed dining too!
