Malawi in April

April

April sees the re-opening of many of Malawi’s lake lodges, along with opportunities to enjoy lots of activities amidst comfortable conditions overall.

What's the weather going to be like in Malawi in April?

  • Daytime temperatures are high, while nights are starting to cool
  • It’s the beginning of the country’s dry season
  • Temperatures are high, but humidity is on the way down
  • We recommend rainwear just in case of showers, especially if you’re travelling in the first two weeks of April.

What are the highlights of visiting Malawi in April?

  • Many of Malawi’s lake lodges re-open following the rains
  • April is a shoulder season month, so costs are lower than during peak times
  • Now that the rains are easing, it’s possible to enjoy a full range of lake activities – diving, snorkelling, kayaking, etc. – and sunbathing too
  • There are fewer mosquitoes about once the rains ease
  • If you’re combining a few days on Lake Malawi with a Zambia safari, you’ll enjoy pleasant conditions in the latter destination, as well as green scenery, increasingly reliable wildlife sightings, and a slightly better choice of accommodation throughout most national parks.

Any lowlights?

  • Sometimes the rains linger, and with them the humidity and the mosquitoes
  • Where the bush is still thick in Zambia’s safari areas, it can still be difficult to spot the wildlife
  • Many of the bushcamps in Zambia are still closed
  • By this time of year, the migratory birds have flown away.
