Out of all of the modes of transport, I do think travelling by helicopter is one of the most spectacular! From hovering over the Okavango Delta in Botswana to scenic transfers over the ocean in Mozambique, you just cannot believe the views from the air. Here are some of the best places in Southern Africa where you can take to the skies on a thrilling helicopter safari...

Victoria Falls helicopter experience, Zimbabwe

There are two types of helicopter safaris you can do over Victoria Falls – a 12-minute Flight of the Angels or a 25-minute Zambezi Spectacular. The 12-minute tour takes you towards the magnificent Victoria Falls, where the pilot weaves over the water and gives you breathtaking views. Your tour ends with a trip up the Zambezi River. The longer tour follows the same route as the shorter tour and then the helicopter flies downstream over the Batoka Gorge. You then fly over the National Park, where you have a great chance of seeing wildlife. When I did this tour on my honeymoon, we saw giraffe, elephant, and buffalo – truly amazing to see from the air! Another option is to get a helicopter transfer from the airport to your lodge – nothing like arriving in style!

Cape Town helicopter experience, South Africa

Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in South Africa. Why not take to the skies and experience the Mother City’s majestic Table Mountain, Twelve Apostles, and even fly down to the southernmost tip of the peninsula, Cape Point? The Twelve Apostles Hotel offers a scenic transfer to or from the V & A Waterfront, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the hustle and bustle of the city.

Okavango Delta helicopter safari, Botswana

Here, you can choose to do your lodge transfers by helicopter, which will give you unrestricted views from the air, perfect for photography! Private helicopter safari tours are a real treat if you are looking to explore the most remote areas of the Okavango Delta, taking you to places that are usually inaccessible and with not another person in sight. This, to me, is the perfect way to explore Africa’s most pristine wildlife destination.

Skeleton Coast helicopter safari, Namibia

Namibia is typically a self-drive destination, but I cannot think of a better way to check out this country and its wonderful landscapes than from the comfort of a private helicopter. Covering immense distances, helicopter safari tours open areas of Namibia that would usually be inaccessible on a shorter time scale. The Namib Desert, Fish River Canyon, Etosha – these are just a few of the extraordinary sights you could include on your helicopter journey, but my favourite has to be a scenic flight over Namibia's Skeleton Coast!

Northern Mozambique helicopter experience

Helicopters in Mozambique are a pretty standard affair when getting to and from some of the more remote islands like Azura Quilalea and Benguerra. However, it is possible to take this to the next level and hire a private helicopter to take you to explore some of the remote islands that make up the dazzling Archipelago.

Kwa-Zulu Natal helicopter safari, South Africa

This incredibly beautiful province is usually overlooked by first-time visitors to South Africa, but if you are looking for superb scenery and authentic, unfiltered culture, then KwaZulu-Natal is an area you should certainly consider. From helicopter safari trips over the city at dusk, watching the sunset, and seeing this vibrant city coming to life, to an early-morning trip to the Valley of a Thousand Hills or a scenic coastal journey, the options are endless.
