After an adventurous safari, Mauritius offers a superb beach retreat. Famous for its amazing marine life and coral reefs, you can continue your safari but take it underwater either with your snorkel, on scuba, or during an undersea walk.

One of the most spectacular sights in the world, with its hundreds of colorful fish and fascinating coral forms, the reefs in Mauritius are quite aptly termed the rainforests of the sea. As well as being able to visit these underwater forests, you can visit them in a variety of different ways, whether that's diving, snorkeling or taking an undersea walk:

1) Undersea walking in Mauritius

This experience is open to non-swimmers and non-divers! You won’t even get your hair wet, as you wear a large helmet. This has a transparent visor and is attached to breathing apparatus manned at all times by your accompanying life guards. Once the helmet’s on, the life guards take you to the bottom of the ocean and walk with you among all the marine life. This is a very interesting sensation, exactly as we imagine it feels to walk on the moon! The stroll takes 15 minutes and is suitable for ages 10 years and over, though Mauritius Attractions does not recommend it for pregnant women. There is also the option for a private walk – designed for four people, this includes private speedboat transfer plus the making of a DVD showing photos and video footage of your underwater adventure!

2) Where to go scuba diving in Mauritius

An excellent assortment of diving packages is available, ranging from some suitable for beginners to others ideal for professional practitioners of the sport. For example, if you have no previous experience, you might like to try a PADI Discover Diving package – this eases you in, via some gentle scuba diving. Intermediates can consider such sites as Grand Bay and Tamarin to hone their skills, while advanced divers will relish the opportunity to explore the caves around the south-west of the island or to go wrecks diving in the northern region. With advanced open water courses also possible, plus trips to neighboring islands for all levels of experience, diving really is a wonderful way to get to know the waters and all their occupants!

3) The best places to snorkel in Mauritius

Snorkeling is also fantastic for checking out the underwater world. We highly recommend the private trip to Coin de Mire, offered by lead excursions operator Mauritius Attractions. Known as Gunner’s Quoin too, this islet off the north coast of Mauritius is considered the best snorkeling location on the island! You are brought to Coin de Mire by speed boat and the trip includes cruising around the north coasts – this is a great opportunity to do a bit of birdwatching too, as the cliffs are home to tropicbirds, shearwater and many more. The snorkeling element of the excursion consists of 90 minutes enjoying spectacular scenes featuring colorful fish – and maybe turtles and dolphins too!
