The North Coast beaches of Mauritius are perfect for you if you love watersports, particularly waterskiing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing! Sailing and deep-sea fishing are also seriously good here.
The area also benefits from breathtakingly beautiful sunsets, as well as plenty of bars and restaurants from which to enjoy ocean views any time of day!
In total, there are 13 beaches on the North Coast. Our favourites are Grand Baie, Mont Choisy, Pereybere, and Trou aux Biches.
Grand Baie, adjacent to the coastal village of the same name, is renowned for its watersports, providing all the activities mentioned above in addition to catamaran cruises. This does mean that the area allocated to swimming is small compared with that of other beaches, and the water is a little less clear. However, Grand Baie has an exciting atmosphere about it and a lot of places to eat and drink – not only restaurants but also stands selling fresh juice.
Mont Choisy is approximately 4 kilometres from Grand Baie, to the south-west. This beach comprises nearly 3 kilometres of pure white sands, curving around the coast to offer a sheltered area for sunbathing. Feathery casuarina trees yield some comfortable shade and the beach tends to be fairly quiet on weekdays. At weekends, it is pretty busy! Waterskiing is available here, and Mont Choisy is also popular with joggers. If you enjoy a game of football, you might like to check out the field next to the beach, where the local players are sure to welcome you.
About 2 kilometres east of Grand Baie, is Pereybere. This beach gets a big thumbs-up from YZ! Surrounded by a coral reef, the waters form a deep lagoon. These are among the clearest seas of all the beaches on Mauritius and absolutely ideal for snorkelling. Inland, the beach teems with stalls selling a great range of sandwiches, kebabs, and even some delicious fresh pineapple! And there are also some fabulous restaurants not too far from the coastline, providing Mauritian, Chinese, and international cuisine.
Lastly, Trou aux Biches is just a few kilometres to the south-west of Grand Baie, next to Trou aux Biches town. Considered the finest in all Mauritius, the appeal of this beach lies in the quality of its sand and the variety of amenities in the immediate area. The sand, stretching for 2 kilometres, is really exquisitely powdery, lovely under foot. Like Pereybere, Trou aux Biches boasts a coral reef that receives a lot of praise from keen snorkellers. The town has shops and a supermarket, very handy if you come here for a picnic! You can relax in the shade of casuarina trees, have a snack, and generally enjoy beach life.
