"A superb welcome to Uganda. Chefs serve food that can compete with the best in the country. The staff are lovely and really make you feel welcome. Despite being in the heart of Entebbe, the gardens are lovely, attracting birds around the pool area. Overall a wonderful place for a first night before you head off elsewhere."

OVERVIEW:

The property first opened its doors to travellers in May 2012, and since then it has gained a great reputation. Karibu is run by Leslie from Corsica and Kevin from New Zealand. Its name means ‘Welcome!’ in Swahili, and guests certainly receive a warm welcome here. Karibu Entebbe is an excellent option for travellers looking for boutique accommodation in this vibrant city.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Karibu is approached via road transfer from Entebbe International Airport, a drive of just 10 minutes or so. It is located on a hillside above the city centre, away from the hustle and bustle while close enough for visitors to access all the main attractions. The property is set back from the road behind a gate. Once the home of Uganda’s president, it is a sturdy stone structure surrounded by gardens.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT KARIBU ENTEBBE:

Inside, there is a comfortable lounge, featuring well-cushioned wood-framed seating around chunky coffee tables. The restaurant has chic separate tables flanked by padded fabric chairs, and there is also a well-stocked bar. Guests may also tuck into food and drink on the property’s terraces, while enjoying garden views. Within the gardens, there is a lovely swimming pool complete with inbuilt seating, floating table, and natural rock waterfall – this is the perfect place to cool off with a sundowner after a busy day.

The guest accommodation at Karibu consists of seven rooms, all within the house. Four are on the ground floor and three occupy the upper level, so you can choose between garden and lake-and-garden views. All rooms have a double bed or twin beds, mosquito nets, bedside tables and lighting, storage space, a seating area, and en-suite facilities comprising flush toilet, washbasin, and walk-in shower or bath with shower attachment. Three of the four ground-floor rooms boast double doors onto a private terrace – these are slightly more expensive, as they are more spacious overall.

**Please be aware that the swimming pool here has no depth markings, so take care before you jump in!**

ACTIVITIES AT KARIBU ENTEBBE:

Plenty of exciting activities are available from Karibu.

  • You could start by taking a trip to Lake Victoria, to check out impressive concentrations of mammals, reptiles, and birds.
  • Entebbe’s botanical gardens are close by the lake, and home to hornbills, Marabou stork, and black-and-white colobus monkey.
  • The gardens also host interesting events throughout the year.
  • An excursion to the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre will appeal to all wildlife lovers – here, animals rescued from illegal traders or poachers, or found with injuries in the wild, are looked after until they are well enough to return to their natural habitat.
  • Visitors can enjoy a general tour as well as a few specials such as ‘Chimpanzee Close-up’ and ‘Keeper for a Day Experience’. Half-day trips to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary are highly recommended for chimp fans.
  • You can also spend a half-day fishing on Lake Victoria, and perhaps end the excursion with a sunset boat cruise.
  • Entebbe has a golf course too, set in exotic grounds.
  • Travel farther afield, and you can check out the Mwamba swamps, East Africa’s adventure capital Jinja, and even Lake Victoria’s gorgeous Ssese Islands.

Extremely friendly and accommodating staff. This hotel was the arrival and departure point for our trip to 3 national parks. We greatly appreciated the fact that the local outfitter's office was located within this hotel. The rooms were clean and well appointed, the food was good, and the grounds were nicely landscaped.

We loved our stay at Karibu! All of the staff were incredible and the food was outstanding. The property itself is beautiful and quiet and it doesn’t even seem as if you are in the middle of the city. It was the perfect place to stay!

How sweet it is to arrive in Entebbe, after nearly 24 hours of international flights, and find myself in a garden of paradise only a 15 minute drive from the airport. That is Karibu Entebbe. Rhys and Samm, the managers, and the staff, made me feel at home immediately. My room was spacious and comfy with a front deck to enjoy the abundant vegetation and melodious birdsong. Located in a quiet, residential area, it's a great place to take a stroll after a long flight, shower and meal. The Victoria Mall, which includes a sports shop for any items you may have forgotten to pack, and the Botanical Gardens are about a 2-mile walk away. Arrangements can be made to be driven there. The food is delicious and if you didn't get a chance to get a mani-pedi before your flight, you can make an appointment with Jennifer, as I did. Getting a massage before the return flight home was another very smart decision I made. Karibu Entebbe is a terrific stop on the way to and from a Uganda safari.

We only spent a day and a half here after arriving at Entebbe airport. The staff was great, and the owner gave us a really good summary of what to expect in Uganda. The hotel is located about 10 minutes away from the airport, which is good to know if you arrive in the middle of the night. The property is located just down the hill from Uganda's old colonial capital building. We were able to walk around the neighborhood during the day without issue and got great views of Lake Victoria. The food was also wonderful!

We stayed here both prior to and after our gorilla experience. It was a lovely oasis in the city, while hearing the roosters crowing and the call to prayer. They kept the kitchen open the first night so we could have a late dinner and get our briefing for our trip to Bwindi. Then on the return we had a day room, which was wonderful. We wanted to do a little bazaar shopping and Sam, from Experience Uganda, was gracious enough to accompany us on this outing. It was relaxing to hang by the pool in the afternoon before having our dinner and then being transported for our late night flight back to Amsterdam. It's a gem!
