OVERVIEW:

Motswari Game Lodge is run by Newmark, a top hotel management company that was established in 1990. Newmark has a portfolio of properties spanning Cape Town, the Serengeti, and Zanzibar, and the company prides itself on its focus and drive. The lodge has been awarded a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence! Accommodation is booked on a full-board basis, including all meals, a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks, and Wi-Fi. Please note, a minimum age requirement of 16 years applies to safari walks, and guests must be at least 18 to take part in sleep-outs at Giraffe’s Nest Hide. Children aged 6 years and older are welcome here.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The lodge can be accessed via 70 kilometres’ road transfer from Hoedspruit. It’s situated in the Motswari Private Game Reserve, quite close to a seasonal river.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT MOTSWARI PRIVATE GAME RESERVE:

Guest accommodation consists of 15 bungalows, dotted about the bush. Each is made out of classic timber, stone, and thatch, to blend beautifully with the landscape. A few steps lead up onto a deck, where you’ll find a couple of easy chairs or campaign chairs and a table – this is a great spot for relaxing and enjoying your views! Every bungalow is designed to sleep a maximum of two guests, and some interlead to provide a superb option for families. Inside, you’ll find a king-size bed or twin beds with mosquito nets, bedside tables and lighting, ample storage furniture, and a separate seating area. Additional amenities include air conditioning, international plugs, tea-and-coffee station (with biscuits!), electronic safe, robes and slippers, and a hairdryer. The en-suite facilities comprise flush toilet, washbasin with mirror over, and shower and/or bathtub. The total floor space of the bungalows ranges from 35 to 45 square metres, and each boasts traditional South African décor and plenty of style!

Motswari’s communal buildings are accessed from the guest bungalows along pathways through the grounds. In common with the bungalows, they’re timber, stone, and thatch structures, raised above ground level. The lounge is open sided and features comfortable sofas and armchairs around coffee tables, in addition to amazing views over manicured lawns as far as the Sohebele river. Guests also enjoy vistas of a popular waterhole! There’s dining furniture in the lounge too, so it’s a pleasant setting for laidback late lunches, for example, accompanied by a drink or few from the well-stocked bar. Other dining venues include the lodge’s open-air boma and the bush itself. Massages and other revitalising treatments are available from the mobile spa, and the swimming pool is the perfect place for relaxing between activities – it’s surrounded by sunloungers and also offers waterhole views!

ACTIVITIES AT MOTSWARI PRIVATE GAME RESERVE:

Things to do at Motswari focus on the wildlife. The reserve forms part of the Timbavati Game Reserve, which is situated to the west of the mighty Kruger National Park. The border between regions is entirely unfenced, so hundreds of species are able to roam both areas. Motswari contains savanna, woodland, and river sources, and a lot of ground can be covered on expertly guided game drives, which take place during early morning and late afternoon into evening.

  • All Big Five live here – lion, rhino, leopard, elephant, and buffalo. You can also expect to see smaller predators such as cheetah, hyenas, jackals, and wild dog, and lots of other herbivores including hippo, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and antelopes. Additionally, there are over 350 types of bird, not least Montagu’s harrier, woolly-necked stork, harlequin quail, and southern carmine bee-eater.
  • Safari walks provide exciting opportunities to observe the feathery friends, as well as to scrutinise the reserve’s insects and plant life. This activity always takes place during the morning. Afternoon tea is the time to enjoy safari interest talks, presented in the lodge’s lounge by knowledgeable game rangers. And if by the end of the day you’re still hungry for safari, you can head out to Giraffe’s Nest Hide, a treehouse-style camp overlooking the Xanatsi Dam.
  • After a simple evening meal and drinks, you and a companion will clamber up onto a sleeping platform that has a king-size bed, seating area, and retractable roof. On an upper level, there’s an eco-bathroom. We highly recommend the hide to guests seeking something special during their time at Motswari, as falling asleep under the stars is certainly memorable. For more information about the hide, or anything else to do with staying at the lodge, please get in touch with a member of our team.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.

This was my first safari experience and they set the bar high. From the moment I reached reception until I got in my car to leave, the staff here was incredible. They all seemed to know my name and my room number without having to ask (amazing!) They greeted me every time I saw them, asked me about my day, and offered to get me anything at any time. The accommodations were beautiful, comfortable, luxury, and clean. The food was amazing!! My ranger and tracker were passionate about their jobs and loved to share insights and facts during our game drives. I loved the small family-like feel to this resort and would absolutely return.

Motswari is truly a magical place. The intimate reserve has incredibly experienced staff in all facets. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with a refreshing tonic and given a brief orientation on the reserve before we set out on our first afternoon game drive. Our guide and tracker have been with Motswari for over 16 years and their experience showed. They also stated that all of their guides are well experienced and have dedicated their careers to the safari industry. Despite the heat and not having any rain for weeks before our arrival, our guide and tracker were always able to find one or more of the big five, other species that live on/around the reserve, and provide plenty of interesting facts and education along the way. They really had an eagle eye and were able to spot things that would shock you - they even spotted a chameleon on the side of the road at dusk! Every game drive was exhilarating and our tracker and guide were always able to safely get us front row seats to any animal sightings. They are extremely versed with all species and able to answer any and all questions that our group had. Their knowledge and instinct on safety helped make every drive exciting and comfortable in all situations. The staff and food at Motswari are exceptional to say the least. Every staff member at the reserve was such a delight to be around and always so helpful. The reception staff was always on top of any logistical detail that we needed. The wait/restaurant staff were professional and personable - Octavius and Prince are two staff members that really stood out to us, they did an exceptional job from greeting and accommodating us whenever we were in a common area. All staff went above and beyond for the guests, and did everything with a smile. You can tell that they are genuine and work hard to make sure every guest is taken care of. The food was over the top delicious. There wasn't one meal or one part of any meal that was disappointing. The chef and kitchen staff would present lunch with a ceremony of traditional song and dance - this made lunchtime that much more special. Also, any foodie would be impressed with the ingredients, presentation and taste of the dishes. I'm not a dessert person, but couldn't resist the chef's cakes and sweets, everything was delicious! There is also always a variety of foods making each meal more interesting than the last. Our bungalow was a dream. Very spacious and well kept. The maid ensures that there is always fresh filtered water and that the mosquito net is opened/closed when need be. It was also nice to have a guard escort us to and from the bungalow after dark - one guard came across a scorpion on our walk back one night and helped us identify and educate on what to do if you encounter a scorpion on the trip. We plan to visit Motswari again and will also be referring the reserve to our friends and family. Everything and everyone at the reserve exceeded our highest expectations and made for an unforgettable first safari experience!

A lovely lodge with wonderful helpful and friendly staff. A strong link with local culture is maintained in harmony with well designed, unobtrusive, character accommodation, excellent food and first-class game drives with skilled guide/tracker teams who got us up close and personal to a range of animals. All on a game reserve rich with so many animals - including all of the Big Five and many others. The camp itself was visited by a large herd of elephants - in between the buildings - while we were there, which served as a reminder that we really are in their natural habitat at all times. Awe-inspiring.

Very welcoming safari lodge with a lovely African feel. We loved the traditional music and dancing after dinner in the Boma, and when the food was presented at every meal. The food was excellent. Our ranger Dannal and tracker Lot were brilliant, and we saw all of the Big Five plus many other animals and birds. The rooms are a little dark due to the African-style decor.
