Muzimu Lodge is one of only two safari properties within Mozambique’s remote Gorongosa National Park. Beyond exceptional, crowd-free game viewing, the experience introduces guests to one of Africa’s most inspiring conservation success stories and to a truly personalised stay, accompanied by warm hospitality and passionate guides.
ACCESS & LOCATION:
Muzimu Lodge is located in Mozambique’s wild Gorongosa National Park in the country’s remote centre. Guests arrive at Johannesburg International Airport and fly to Beira (BEW), followed by a 35-minute Safari Air charter flight to Chitengo airstrip within the park.
AMENITIES AT MUZIMU LODGE:
Muzimu Lodge features six classic tented suites, secluded within the riverine forest overlooking the seasonal Mussicadzi River. Stylishly understated, each suite offers a king-sized bed draped in mosquito netting, a writing desk, and a comfortable indoor lounge. Modern comforts include an electronic safe, fans, and tea-and-coffee-making facilities. Each light-filled en-suite bathroom boasts a large walk-in rain shower and a flush loo. Outside, private wooden decks provide a peaceful vantage point to observe passing wildlife and the filtered sunlight. In keeping with Muzimu’s commitment to conservation, the lodge is powered by solar energy. Please note that while Wi-Fi is provided, it is available exclusively within the guest suites.

The heart of Muzimu Lodge lies in its open-air lounge and dining areas, where shaded decks offer stunning river views and front-row seats to Gorongosa’s diverse wildlife. Meals are served al fresco to the sounds of the bush, featuring the freshest seasonal ingredients. For greater privacy and exclusivity, private bush dinners can also be organised in a secluded spot under the stars. Cool off in the swimming pool or retreat to a sunlounger with a book to enjoy the forest’s tranquillity – Muzimu is a peaceful haven with plenty of corners for guests to pause and connect with nature. As evening falls, the fire-pit becomes a gathering point for sharing safari stories and tales of the day’s events. Game drives
– Venture into Gorongosa National Park on morning and afternoon game drives, where you’ll learn all about its remarkable restoration story. You’ll cross floodplains and forests, and encounter the park’s thriving wildlife, including an enormous waterbuck population, lion, wild dog, and elephant, to name a few. Stop for a scenic coffee or sundowner, depending on the time of day. -
Walking safaris
– Guided walking safaris take you to the heart of the bush, accompanied by an expert guide who’ll highlight significant animal trails, tracks, flora, and fauna. Gain a unique perspective on the intricate details of the bush while keeping an eye open for larger species. -
Pangolin conservation
– Gorongosa’s Pangolin Conservation Centre delivers a one-of-a-kind experience where guests can learn about the rescue and rehabilitation of these remarkable creatures. Spend five nights or more, and you can also choose to join a morning foraging walk, track pangolins, and speak with vets and rangers about what it really takes to protect this threatened species. -
E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Lab tours
– The E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Lab is a modern scientific facility within Gorongosa National Park, where visitors can learn about conservation, ecology, and research initiatives. -
Community visits
– Visit communities around Gorongosa National Park, where you’ll meet local Mozambicans and learn about local initiatives, such as empowering young women through education and early childhood development programmes. A community levy is included in your stay, so your visit directly contributes to these projects. -
Mount Gorongosa and coffee plantation tour
– Explore beautiful Mount Gorongosa, hike to the pristine pools of Murombodzi Falls, and enjoy a delicious picnic lunch in the heart of nature. The Gorongosa Coffee Project teaches how sustainable farming helps restore the mountain’s ecosystem, and the day concludes with a coffee tasting. Please note that this activity incurs an additional cost. -
Seasonal boating
– During the wetter months, it’s possible to access the park’s seasonal waterways by boat, taking in the spectacular birdlife, large hippo pods, and wading crocs. Lake Urema boat safaris are also possible when water levels permit.
