"On the banks of the Zambezi river in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, close to Victoria Falls, this luxury camp gives you breathtaking views out over the river and access to all the local activities. This is a great place to relax before or after the safari portion of your trip."

OVERVIEW:

Wilderness’ Toka Leya provides the perfect, classy oasis away from the bigger hotels, just upstream from Victoria Falls, in a prime, secluded spot on the banks of the River Zambezi. Being located in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park also means you can enjoy game drives, looking out for rhino, which have been reintroduced here. Authentic, chic, and retaining the intimacy of a safari camp, Toka Leya gets you away from the hustle and bustle, while still offering the myriad of activities that make the Falls so special.

Wilderness run some of the best properties in Africa, so supreme service and food come as standard here, and their tiny eco-footprint allows them to acquire the best locations for their properties! The rooms, which are raised on stilts so as not to affect the undergrowth, are all stunning, offering great privacy and wonderful views of the river. The main areas and viewing deck with infinity pool also have river views, and you can watch the resident crocs, hippos, and elephants from camp as they go about their business. If you’re looking to take in the Falls, do some river-based activities, and embark on an expertly guided taster safari before coming home to sundowners overlooking the Zambezi, this could be the one for you! After a long journey to Africa, it’s the perfect place to relax, acclimatise, and appreciate the Zambezi in a world-class setting, before the main safari portion of your itinerary begins. Included in your room rate is a range of activities, including a guided tour of Victoria Falls, a tour of Livingstone, and motorboat and vehicle safaris, which may be all you need!

ACCESS & LOCATION:

Toka Leya is located just 10 kilometres upstream from Victoria Falls, in a delightfully private spot on a wide bend of the Zambezi river, just outside the Zambian town of Livingstone. The views from camp are magnificent, with jackalberry and knobthorn trees providing shade from the heat of the day, and its superb position gives you the feeling of having a section of river all to yourself. Not to mention that the camp has been expertly positioned for amazing sunsets! With hippos, crocs, and elephants as your neighbours, spotted from a great viewing deck, and a plethora of easily accessible activities on offer, Toka Leya has one of the best locations of any luxurious property around the Falls. The camp is usually accessed by 20 minutes’ road transfer from Livingstone’s airport, which has good connections through Johannesburg, making it the ideal starting point for a southern Africa safari.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT WILDERNESS TOKA LEYA:

The camp has 12 enormous, luxury tented suites, raised on stilts. They are semi-solid in build, with sliding doors and windows to better control room temperature. Each room is beautifully appointed with a sitting area, tea and coffee station, twin washbasins, indoor and outdoor showers, private veranda with river views, and a comfy four-poster bed complete with mosquito netting. Charmingly lit wooden walkways link the rooms to the camp’s main area and the décor is elegant ‘safari chic’ with natural, earthy colours and little touches that make you feel you’re somewhere special.

The main parts of the property and dining area are all open plan, with the mighty Zambezi as the extra guest at the table! The food is superb and includes both local Zambian favourites (often including the barbeque), and various classic international dishes, all cooked from local fresh produce. There’s a pizza oven too, which gives rise to some delightful evenings around the campfire on the little sandy beach next to camp. Private dining and in-room food service are available on request. It’s also worth mentioning the quality of the spa tent, which delivers excellent deep-tissue massages – perfect for unwinding after a long journey!

ACTIVITIES AT WILDERNESS TOKA LEYA CAMP:

There’s an impressive assortment of activity options in and around Victoria Falls – possibly the most diverse selection anywhere in Africa! From helicopter flights over the Falls to fishing, river cruises, and a variety of white-knuckle adventures, there’s something to suit everyone. And whatever you decide to do, you can rest assured that Wilderness will be using the best providers available. Most activities can be booked and paid for locally, some are included with your room rate, some need to be booked and paid for before travel… so we’d always recommend discussing with your travel consultant what you’d like to fit in! They can advise how best to manage and maximise your time here.

  • Expertly guided game drives

    - Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is well populated with game, but it lacks the predator numbers that might make it a destination in its own right. You can expect to see buffalo, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, and impala, as well as white rhino, which have been successfully reintroduced here. Another highlight is the diversity and wealth of birdlife, such as the half-collared kingfisher, the African skimmer, Schalow’s turaco, and the African finfoot. Since the property is actually inside the park, these can sometimes be seen from camp.
  • Walking with rhinos

    - Rhino tracking with superb guides and rangers is a wonderful opportunity to get out on foot with these amazing, prehistoric animals. This activity is available at extra cost and it needs to be pre-booked. Please note that you must be at least 12 years old to take part in walking safari, and walking guides must be available to accompany you (which is why booking is important).
  • Victoria Falls

    - This natural wonder does not disappoint – the sound, the spray! Called ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’, or ‘The Smoke That Thunders’, by the locals, it is technically the world’s largest sheet of falling water. And there are many ways of seeing it, but the best is to traverse through the spray (although watch out for the naughty baboons!) on a path that descends from the main road. A guided tour is included with your room rate.
  • Cultural trips

    - Tours of Livingstone town and museum, as well as visits to Mkuni Market and a local village, are all included in your room rate. This is a lovely way of meeting the local people and taking in some wonderful Zambian culture.
  • Horseback safaris

    - These can be booked by Toka Leya through nearby Chundukwa River Lodge, where the camp has stables. Both shorts rides and full-day excursions are available, and a wide range of experience levels is accepted. Truly a delightful way to explore the national park!
  • White-knuckle adventures

    - There are a lot of things you can do if you fancy some serious adventure! These can mostly be booked and paid for locally through the camp. Canoe safari, white water rafting, bungee jumping, gorge swinging, jet-boating, quad-biking, microlights… the list goes on. Victoria Falls is one of the best places in the world to do some of these activities, given its iconic location.
  • Boating and fishing

    - The boating safaris here are amazing. As well as the hippos, crocs, and a wide array of birdlife, the Zambezi offers some of the best boating in Africa. Fishing is also an option and can be seasonal – and though it’s not for everyone, plucking a giant tigerfish or bream from the river can be quite a thrill. Of course there’s a catch-and-release policy. The optimum months for fishing are October to December.
  • Helicopter flights

    - This is a spectacular way of seeing the Falls from the sky. It’s not quite as peaceful as a river cruise, but you certainly cover more terrain, and can stop off at beautiful places for picnics. Flights come at extra cost and need to be pre-booked.

*This property is unfenced and located in a wildlife area, so large and potentially dangerous animals do pass through. If you opt to stay here, always be alert when walking around the camp and request for a member of staff to escort you if you have any concerns. Any guest is escorted after dark as a matter of course.
