Mozambique Family Vacations

Mozambique can be a great destination for family vacations and Africa’s finest beach destination, but care must be taken to choose the right places to stay.

The first point to mention is that the whole of Mozambique is in Africa’s malaria belt. This is not to be taken lightly – we do not advise that very young children should travel to Mozambique. Our recommended age for travel in malarial areas is six and above.

Family vacation accommodation in Mozambique

Unsurprisingly, this section on family vacations in Mozambique is primarily about beach vacations – Mozambique is Africa’s finest beach destination. The beaches here are world class, offering a good choice of hotels as well as a wide range of activities. The seas are packed with great diving spots and easy snorkeling reefs, while the lodges offer great kids’ entertainment. The beaches are among the finest in the world. The northern Quirimbas Archipelago is less child friendly than the south, yet still offers a number of fantastic options for families with older children. The only downside is that it takes a significant amount of effort to get to this area, something that families tend to try to avoid. The southern Mozambique Bazaruto Archipelago is much more suitable for families. Here, there are a number of extra activities children will enjoy, and the travel time is significantly less than for the north. Our favorite beach lodge for families is the Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort & Spa, a relatively large resort with the widest range of activities as well as a number of great family rooms. Nearby Azura and Benguerra also offer good accommodation options for families.

Safari lodges in Mozambique are few and far between. They cater for safari enthusiasts looking for true wilderness, rather than families hoping to get a big game fix. We would go so far as to say that Mozambique is not a good safari destination for families unless you know exactly what you are looking for.
