“One of the grandest examples of colonial architecture built in the 1920s, Deloraine is set on the lower slopes of Londiani Mountain. The property is situated just a 45-minute drive from Lake Nakuru National Park, and boasts a stable of horses that is an equestrian heaven.”

OVERVIEW:

Deloraine is owned and run by Offbeat Safaris. This company was founded in 1990 by the late great Tristan Voorspuy. Since Tristan’s death in 2017, his wife Cindy and two children Archie and Imo have kept the business going, and Deloraine is in fact the family’s own home as well as a base for thrilling riding activities and day trips! Among the many awards, the property has won is The Safari Awards’ Best Riding Safari 2018. Accommodation is booked on an all-inclusive basis all year round, and a number of special offers are available – please contact a member of YZ for details.

ACCESS & LOCATION:

The house can be accessed via road transfer from Lake Naivasha’s airstrip. It has a wonderful location on the lower slopes of Londiani Mountain, on the Great Rift Valley’s western edge, and just 45 minutes’ drive from Lake Nakuru.

ACCOMMODATION & FACILITIES AT DELORAINE HOUSE:

There are eight rooms – three double rooms and two family rooms are situated inside the house, while the grounds contain three double rooms within an adjacent cottage. All options are very spacious and comfortable. A double room typically contains a four-poster double bed, bedside stands and lamps, a writing desk and chair, other elegant lighting, snug rugs underfoot, and some tasteful wall art. En-suite facilities comprise flush toilet, washbasin, shower, and bathtub. The two rooms allocated to a family share a bathroom. Within the house, both upstairs and downstairs accommodation is available.

The communal facilities at Deloraine are equally impressive. In the drawing room, well-cushioned sofas are positioned around a rather grand bow-legged coffee table, in front of a welcoming fireplace. There are occasional tables too, as well as sophisticated lighting, long rows of shelves bulging with books, more artwork, and colorful Persian-style rugs on the shiny wooden floor. The dining room features one large table where everyone eats together, seated on brass-studded leather chairs. Guests can also relax and tuck in to delicious food and drink on the house’s wide verandas, all the while marveling at views over the mature gardens. The grounds include a croquet lawn, a tennis court, and a swimming pool, so there’s plenty to keep guests entertained in between trips out to Lake Nakuru and other areas!

ACTIVITIES AT DELORAINE HOUSE:

Deloraine offers a great range of activities, as follows:

  • Horse riding

    - The house has extensive stables, home to over sixty horses. Please note, for safety reasons, Offbeat Safaris does not offer riding activities to children. Guests aged 16 years and over can enjoy hacking, cross-country, and polo! The mountainside around Deloraine is a very scenic location for horse rides, while cross-country trips include jumps. The house’s polo pitch is full size, perfect for really keen equestrians.
  • Day trips to Lake Nakuru

    - Beautiful Lake Nakuru is situated at the heart of Lake Nakuru National Park, which covers 188 square kilometers within the Great Rift Valley. The park may be small by most safarists’ standards, but it’s highly scenic and it contains many wildlife highlights. The best known of these is the vast flocks of flamingos, but there are a lot of mammals to view as well – lion, leopard, cheetah, black and white rhinos, and Rothschild giraffe. Among numerous other bird specials are greater spotted eagle, grey crowned crane, Kenya rufous sparrow, and shining sunbird.
  • Other day trips

    - Guests can also head out to lakes Bogoria and Baringo. In common with Lake Nakuru, both these bodies of water are features of the Great Rift Valley. Bogoria boasts impressive populations of flamingo too, while Baringo has a Goliath heronry, set on a rocky islet.
